The meaning is, from the sound of the word "tree," one understands the aspect of the cognition that apprehends the part of the object that is the tree. Why is it established as the part of the object that is the tree in the appearance? It is because it is established by being the opposite of other things that are not trees. The meaning of the second quote is that the word "tree" expresses the object of the tree that appears in the conceptualization, which is distinguished by the exclusion of others, which is the same as the meaning of "these meanings that exist in knowledge." The meaning of the third quote will appear in the context of the text. Third, regarding the meaning of the first quote, refuting the debate: This appearance that appears in the conceptualization, as the subject, does not have even a little of the nature of a tree, because it is the substance of knowledge. Regarding the meaning of the second quote, refuting the debate: If one says that the object distinguished by opposition is the same as what is considered the object of a sound that possesses generality, then the meaning of the object distinguished by opposition is also that from the sounds of trees, etc., by recognizing the image of the tree that appears in the conceptualization, one will naturally recognize the opposition to other things that are not trees, because the image itself is fixated on as a tree. For that image of a tree, as the subject, it is not possible to recognize from the sound that it is distinguished by some other general meaning that is opposed to non-trees, because those other general meanings are not your distinguishing characteristics. Regarding the meaning of the third quote, refuting the debate: If the word "tree" has two different functions, eliminating non-trees and establishing trees, because the word "tree" eliminates non-trees, then the word "tree," as the subject, does not perform two different functions of establishing trees and eliminating non-trees, because establishing trees itself is eliminating non-trees, because trees and non-trees are mutually contradictory, not things that exist in one nature. Fourth, this opposition that has become the actual object of sound does not exist in ultimate truth, because although this opposition is not a thing, it is seen as possessing external things, which is only due to the delusion of the mind. If that which is opposed to non-trees exists elsewhere than in the object of the tree, is it the object of the tree or an object other than the tree? If it is the former, then...

Therefore, it will not become the entity of a tree. Because what is opposite to a non-tree entity is the entity of Shapa. According to the latter, Shapa will not become the entity of a tree. Because what is opposite to a non-tree entity is an entity other than Shapa. Both cannot be accepted, because it can be said that Shapa and Palasha are different from this non-tree. Fifth, if the image of conception is expressed by sound, after saying the sound "tree," the sound of saying "tree is impermanent," and the reason for proving it in this way will become meaningless. Because the consciousness of holding the image of the tree-holding conception is self-characterized, so when expressing it, impermanence and so on will also be expressed. If someone thinks like this, then, the image of the tree-holding conception, as the subject, when you cut off the permanent dharma that seems to be mixed in the conception, the sound "tree is impermanent" performs the act of cutting it off uniquely, but the sound "tree" does not perform the act of cutting it off, because the object that you cut off with the sound "tree" has no self-characterized object of expression. This is universal, if the self-characterized is directly expressed by sound, then whatever is used to express the self-characterized, all the dharmas of that self-characterized will be completely understood, because the entity of the self-characterized is due to the power of being the same entity as impermanence and so on. Therefore, the sound of saying "tree" and the sound of saying "tree is impermanent," as the subject, will become having multiple results or necessities and having the same basis of dharma, because expressing the multiple distinguishing parts on the tree, therefore it is like that. Furthermore, the appearing image is also non-different from consciousness, therefore, just like consciousness, when expressing that thing, isn't it obtained that the thing is completely understood by the power of the thing? If someone thinks like this, then it is not obtained, because when consciousness is non-different from it and becomes its own characteristic, just like consciousness, at the time of self-awareness, it is not expressed like the external object's own characteristic. Because it clings to the meaning of the external object and appears as the general characteristic of the external object, therefore it is apparent to the wisdom arising from sound, therefore it is the object of expression of sound, and it is the nature of consciousness.
