"For the sake of." According to the second case, if non-tree is excluded and the name of tree is agreed upon, then it becomes that non-tree is not excluded. Because non-tree is not understood, the inference that "because tree is not understood" cannot be refuted. The third case is that for the appearances of tree and non-tree, seeing separately the presence or absence of the common entity of tree, at the time of agreement, agreeing that "this alone is tree," therefore, at the time of expression, there is no fault of falling into non-tree, and because agreement is made on the commonality, it also becomes that agreement is made on all exclusions, therefore it pervades everything. For those who speak of exclusion, this is not the same, because the commonality does not exist in the object, and the meaning of the time of agreement is interrupted, so at the time of expression, there is a fault of not understanding the meaning. If it is said like this, then according to our view, for things like trees with the same fruit, understanding them as the same kind, this consciousness is the cognizer abiding in the same thing, the dharma. After you directly see the appearances of tree and non-tree separately, through discrimination, the cause of understanding them as the same kind, such as Shapa and so on, and the cause of not being the same kind, such as stones and so on, without relying on agreement, you yourself can distinguish them as different minds, which will also arise before the agreement of tree, because the mind that understands Shapa and so on as the same kind exists, because the appearance of the object is the cause of that mind, appearing as the external tree, and appearing as not the cause of that mind, separated from the nature of non-tree, and the external trees also appear to have the same nature, and due to attachment, one's own Shapa and so on are different from non-tree, and can be understood to some extent. After that, for the discrimination that is different from non-tree, for the exclusion that appears, the name "this is tree" is agreed upon, and the sound agreed upon in this way, at the time of expression, will also show the exclusion that appears in the mind, thereby producing understanding. The mind at that time is also mistaken for the external object, so it is understood as if the objects of the previous and subsequent meanings are the same, even if there is no commonality, and the meaning of the time of agreement is interrupted, there is no fault of not understanding the meaning at the time of expression. The fourth case is that the expressive sound is the dharma, and the listener's mind is hesitant.

It is only in order to turn away from other meanings and to apply to certain definite meanings that one combines. This is in order for the listener to grasp the desired meaning definitively. Second, refuting that there is no object to be cut off, and therefore no exclusion and application: If the sound of 'tree' etc. applies by exclusion, then the sound of 'knowable' etc. should not apply by exclusion. Because there is no object of exclusion that is not knowable. If it is made an object of thought, it will become knowable, and if it is not, it cannot be excluded. If this is said, then the words 'all phenomena are knowable' etc. are used in terminology related to other words, and for those who have understanding, there are some points that can cut off the listener's doubts. Any language used to express meaning, if the listener does not cut off from other than the point of cutting off doubts, then using it to express meaning becomes meaningless, therefore it is so. Third, refuting the examination of whether the opposite exists in things, there are five points: The way the opposite becomes expressed; establishing scriptural arguments for it; refuting disputes over the meaning of scripture; therefore, the opposite does not exist in things; refuting the subsequent meaninglessness of sound signs. The first point is: If the opposite that you desire is established in things, then there will be the same fault of expression as with the commonality-thing-ists, and if it does not exist in things, then expressing it will have no necessity or ability. If this is said, then applying the sound 'tree' to that which has the appearance of a tree, the common cause of similar appearances, distinguishing the characteristics of a tree, such as bark etc., from those that are not trees, is necessary. Because the meaning-seeker is in order to distinguish a certain tree from non-trees, so it is applied to the tree in order to turn away from non-trees. The second point is that the appearance of the cognition holding a tree, that is, clinging to the appearance of an external tree, that itself is the opposite of the tree, therefore that itself is the direct object of expression of the sound 'tree', which has been explained in detail in the root text of Valid Cognition. In the root text of Valid Cognition it says: "By turning away from others, a part of that thing will become understandable." And "Sound only expresses those things that are distinguished by turning away from others." And "Sound turns away from the others of sound and meaning, and expresses its own meaning-function." The first verse of
