For this reason, there is a single term applicable such as "cause of eye consciousness." What is the necessity? Even if the self-nature of things like eyes is not different from the general entity, the term called the cause of eye consciousness, that thing is necessary. Why? Because when there is no difference, that is, the common result of the union of the three conditions, the cause of eye consciousness, when it is generally necessary to show, at some times, in order to understand all three conditions at the same time. This is stated in the 'Treasury of Reasoning': 'By engaging in the activities of refutation and establishment for different things, one can understand one aspect of them.' Fourth, refuting the arguments of the proponents of general entities is divided into two: refuting the application of a single term by the power of general entities; refuting the production of a single result by the power of general entities. The first is divided into two: stating the opponent's view; explaining the refutation. The first is: If it is not because of a single result that a single term is applied to many things, but because a single general entity exists, then for many appearances of cows, the term "cow" should also be applicable. The second is divided into three: the reason for a single existence is not established; there is no pervasiveness of applying a term; even if different but similar, there is pervasiveness. The first is divided into two: refuting by examining the meaning of existence; pointing out the harm to existence itself. The first is divided into two: examining the two extremes and refuting them together; refuting the two extremes of examination separately. The first is: In many appearances, a single general exists, does this mean that a single general exists in many appearances in a dependent manner? Or does it mean that many appearances exist as the cause of making a single general appear? If we examine these two situations, then the general is unreasonable in both cases, the reasons will be explained separately below. The second is divided into two: refuting existence in a dependent manner; refuting existence in a way of appearing. The first is: As in the first case mentioned above, then the appearing things are not the basis of the permanent general that is different from themselves, because the permanent general does not provide any help to it. If it is said that it is not pervasive, just as a shelf does not help a tree, but it is the basis of the tree. Then, the trees and water, etc. that depend on the shelf are also the same.

Although the crutch doesn't help, it's not like relying on a crutch, what is the situation where one would fall to another place without a crutch? Because one's own immediate acquisition and place are the same, it is able to make the immediate acquisition dwell in that place, because of the function of the crutch and so on. If one thinks that clarity and generality are also the same, then, the general characteristic has the property that it is impossible for the clarity to produce the dwelling in its own immediate acquisition and place, because it is a permanent dharma. If it is said that the clarity of the general characteristic is not newly produced from what was not there before, but is the support for making what has already been established dwell, then, the general characteristic has the property that it is not made to dwell by clarity, because it can dwell even without clarity. Furthermore, the general characteristic has the property that it is also unreasonable for clarity to make it dwell, because if one analyzes whether the dwelling made by clarity is other than itself or not other, one will find that it is unreasonable for clarity to make it dwell. If it is other, then clarity has the property that it does not make the general characteristic dwell, because it makes the dwelling of a dharma other than the general characteristic. If it is not other, then the general characteristic dwelling has the property that it is not made by clarity, because it is one entity with the general characteristic that clarity has not made. There are two types of the second situation: the manifest and the manifester have no example to establish. Even if it is established, it does not possess reason and is not established. The first is: According to the second situation analyzed above, generally speaking, if the general characteristic is the manifest and the manifester, it must be cause and effect, because the manifest is for the meaning of being able to actually generate the consciousness that focuses on the self, for the sake of other manifesters, relying on it to generate self-grasping, whatever that manifest is is the manifest, and the agent manifester that is able to generate that self-grasping consciousness is also considered the cause of that manifest. The reason is established, because the manifest vase etc. is such that if it does not rely on the manifester, it is originally able to actually generate self-grasping consciousness, then, it actually generates self-grasping consciousness, it should not actually rely on that manifester. That general characteristic has the property that it is not from the clarity that possesses the general characteristic, but from the manifest, it is unreasonable, because clarity does not help, and by the power of strength, it will not become able to generate self-grasping consciousness. If it is said that it is not pervasive, because establishing clarity as the manifester of the general characteristic is not considered to be able to generate general characteristic grasping consciousness, but the sense faculty
