Thus it is. Secondly, the argument is: The Carvaka, is like a prostitute who defeats her husband with sweet talk, because they have not completely eliminated the obstacles to entering the treatise—contradictions with the three valid cognitions, and have not shown the limbs of entry—the three qualities such as the meaning connection of the treatise. Moreover, it is because they claim that the Vedas, with the sign of not deceiving in one aspect, acknowledge that everything has a true meaning. If asked: Where does the contradiction with the three valid cognitions exist, and how has it not been eliminated? Answer: The Vedas, express meanings that contradict the three valid cognitions, namely: the person is permanent and is the agent; sounds and other things are permanent; the general that transcends the scope of the senses is apprehended by the senses; things are produced by unequal causes—permanent causes; abiding is unequal—abiding by other dependent meanings; destruction is unequal—destruction by other causes that arise later than their own causes; furthermore, like the hidden consciousness and the permanence of sound, they are the objects refuted by the two types of valid cognition of direct perception; or, like acknowledging sin as the fruit of affliction, and then claiming that bathing can eliminate sin, they contradict the inference that relies on scripture. The Vedas, have not completely eliminated the contradictions with the three valid cognitions, because they have not answered the arguments that contradict them. Thirdly, if seeing one part of the words as true establishes that all the remaining words are valid, that is, true, then what is untrue in the many words spoken by this person? There is nothing untrue, because you do not say that there is not a single true meaning in it, that is, it is possible that one part is true. Fourthly, therefore, there are two kinds of errors in language alone regarding the meaning to be expressed: language alone has no connection with meaning, therefore the meaning to be expressed cannot be determined. The first case is: this sound, is not inherently the same as the object of expression that it apprehends, nor is it its result, because even if there is no object of expression that it apprehends, it exists in the speaker's mind, that is, it arises only from the intention to express. Therefore, as the expressing sound, the object of expression that it apprehends cannot be established from you, because there are not two connections between you and the object of expression that it apprehends.

Because neither side is established, the pervasion is established. If one were to completely reverse this single arising connection, there would still be no non-deceptive establishment of what is to be established, because there is no such situation. If it is said that the expressing sound is not the result of the expressed meaning, this is not established. Because the entry of the various words of the expressing sound into meaning arises through transmission from the expressed meaning. Because from the expressed meaning arises the direct perception of seeing it, from that arises the desire to express, from that arises words, therefore it is produced through the transmission of the expressed meaning. If this is said, then, for a pot as the subject, how does the word expressing both mutually contradictory permanent and impermanent enter? It does not enter. Because it does not have the nature of both permanent and impermanent. Second, because there is no connection between word and meaning, therefore, scripture as the subject, from scripture being established as the reason, which of the meanings it expresses is determined by valid cognition? It is not. Because for those who want to understand what is to be expressed from scripture, scripture and the things it expresses, if they are not in the object of some valid cognitions, the relationship of non-occurrence will not be established. Therefore, scripture as the subject, because you are valid cognition, even if you are reversed, you will not fail to establish a meaningful thing, because you are not valid cognition. Therefore, mundane valid cognition as the subject, you with the result of necessarily having no meaning, because you do not perceive it, it is not established. If there is a meaningful thing, then your seeing it is not pervasive, therefore it is for this reason. Fifth, showing internal contradiction, thereby criticizing the speaker: The foolish logician as the subject, possesses the five signs of the fruit of corrupted wisdom, namely: considering the Vedas that show various internal contradictions as valid cognition, and saying that a permanent person creates, and believing that bathing the body can cleanse the sins of the mind, and even without qualities such as wisdom and morality, considering oneself a Brahmin, being arrogant with caste arguments, and relying on five people to destroy sins, etc., saying that one inflicts suffering on the body, because it possesses these five signs. Third, is the commentary on the words of the Compendium on Valid Cognition, "The Rays of Samantabhadra," the explanation of inference for oneself after direct perception, that is, the explanation of the first chapter. Good! Good! Good!
