Because it exists, the appearance of things appears as if it were the external tree that became the cause of that consciousness. That which is not the cause of that consciousness appears as if it were separated from the nature of non-tree. The external trees all appear to be of the same nature, and clinging to one's own flesh and blood, etc., are known to be different from non-trees, so in one aspect it will be known. After that, for the recognition that is distinguished from non-trees, the term "this is a tree" is used, and the sound expressed in that way, in the period of expression, will also appear the image of excluding others that appears in the consciousness, so that it is recognized. The consciousness at that time is also mistaken for the external environment because of its appearance, so it is like recognizing that the previous and subsequent things are the same thing, so there is no generality, and even if the meaning at the time of expression disappears, there will be no fault of not understanding the meaning in the period of expression. Fourth, the expressive sound is a dharma, in order to make the listener's doubtful consciousness turn from the only meaning and enter into some definite meaning, so it should be used well. This is in order to make the listener firmly grasp the desired meaning. Second, refute the view that there is no exclusion without what is to be cut off, if the sound of trees, etc., enters through exclusion, then the sound of knowledge, etc., should not enter through exclusion. Because there is no knowledge that is not to be cut off, if it is made the object of consciousness, it will become knowledge, and if it is not done, it cannot be excluded. If it is said that all dharmas are knowledge, etc., then it can be established in the expression related to other words, for the knowers, it is a dharma. There are some places that can cut off the listener's doubts, any speech that is used to express meaning, if the listener cannot cut off other than cutting off the doubts, then using it to express meaning will become meaningless, so it is for this reason. Third, there are five points to refute the view of examining whether the opposite exists in things: the way the opposite becomes expressed. To this, establish the argument of the scriptures. Refute the dispute over the meaning of the scriptures. Therefore, the opposite does not exist in things. Refute the later sound symbols as meaningless. First, if the opposite that you admit is established in things, then the same fault as the general thing will appear.

If things do not exist on the ground, then the necessity and ability to speak of them will be lost, is that so? The characteristics of trees that are different from those non-trees, such as the bark, etc., the common reason for appearing similar, for those who are attached to the appearance of trees as external trees, establishing the word "tree" is necessary, because the meaning-seeker is to distinguish which tree is different from which non-tree, thereby understanding the tree by negating the non-tree. Second, the appearance of tree-grasping conceptualization that is attached to the external tree itself is the negation of the tree, so it itself is the direct object of expression of the word "tree," which has been fully explained in the treatise on valid cognition. The treatise on valid cognition says: "Through the negation of others, some parts of that thing can be understood." And "Words distinguish by negating others, and only express those things that are distinguished." And "Words can eliminate the others of words and meanings, and express their own meaning." The meaning of the first quote is that from the word "tree," one can understand the part of the tree's thing, that is, the appearance of tree-grasping conceptualization. If asked: Why should the appearance be established as the thing-part of the tree? The answer is: Because it is established through the negation of non-trees. The meaning of the second quote is: Through the word "tree," the thing of the tree that appears in conceptualization, which is distinguished by the negation of others, is expressed, which is the same as the meaning of "these meanings that exist in knowledge." The meaning of the third quote will appear in the context of the text. Third, refuting the argument against the meaning of the first quote: For this appearance that appears in conceptualization, it does not have any nature of a tree, because it is a substance of knowledge. Refuting the argument against the meaning of the second quote: If it is said that what is expressed is the thing distinguished by negation, then it is equivalent to admitting that the universal is the object of the word, if it is thought so, then the meaning of "the thing distinguished by negation" is also from the words such as tree, by understanding the image of the tree that appears in conceptualization, one can understand the negation of non-trees merely through understanding, because the image itself is attached to as a tree. For the image of the tree, it is not distinguished by the negation of non-trees, nor is it distinguished by some other universals, the word cannot understand it, because some other universals are also your characteristics.
