Sound, the subject, should be the same as its meaning. Because the sound and meaning that are established as substances are not separate from that meaning. If you accept this, then sound cannot be the connector of meaning. If you say that it is neither one nor different, then, the connection between sound and meaning, the subject, should not be a substance. Because, from the perspective of sound and meaning, it is neither one substance nor a different substance. This is pervasively established. Because there is no other substance besides the difference of substances and the oneness of substance. Therefore, sound and meaning, the subject, the connection that appears as a mixture of you two is made by conceptual thought, that is, it is fabricated. Because the connection that appears as a mixture of you two is established in convention, however, the nature of your two substances is different. Furthermore, the connection between sound and meaning, the subject, how can the other become dependent on sound and meaning, or how can the other become the connection of sound and meaning? It should not become so. Because it exists naturally in sequence, and because it exists as a substance. Applying this to the treatise that refutes other substances is also because one has not truly understood the abiding of the treatise and the power of existing substances. Third, clarifying the connection between what is said and what is said by the sound of knowledge, if it exists in meaning, does it exist in letters and meaning, or does it exist in words and so on and meaning? If it is like the first case, letters, the subject, should not have the nature of a substance in the connection between the meaning of what is said and what is said. Because it would become unable to show the meaning of what is said. If it is like the second case, words and speech and so on, the subject, how can the connection of substance between you and the meaning of what is said be established? It should not be able to be established. Because it is imputed by conceptual thought, and there is no substance in meaning. Moreover, the momentary self-characteristics of sound that appear to the hearing consciousness each cannot show meaning, and assembly is also impossible, therefore it is not a real speaker, but conceptual thought holds the previous and subsequent parts of the sound as one, and appearance is established as speech, words, and speaker, etc., therefore those do not exist in meaning. Letters are also, on the self-characteristic of the part of the sound, established with the name of letters, and those many assemblies are held as one by conceptual thought, up to the duration of an eye blink, established as the nature of letters, of these two, the first has already been explained as not being able to show the meaning of what is said. The latter is non-substantial, the same as speech and words. Second, there are three ways to examine and refute the root reason: the subject property

Refuting all proofs. Refuting the proofs with pervasion. Refuting the distinctions of the nature of the subject. The first has two: refuting by examining the proof, and refuting by examining the subject. The first has two: refuting the reason of not remembering the author, and refuting the reason of beginningless recitation. The first is: The Vaisheshika says, the Vedas are the subject, and it is also considered not man-made, because the authors are not remembered. Following suit like this, then the world is covered by the darkness of evil, because that reason does not establish pervasion and the nature of the subject. Like this, Buddhists remember the eighth one, Miu Tong Heaven, various virtuous friends as authors, and old wells, etc., have the involvement of the reason, so the pervasion is also uncertain. The second has two: stating the reason, and refuting it. The first is: Like that, other than the reciter of the Vedas, it is also considered that the author is Ishvara, etc., also the subject, the reciter precedes the former, because it is the reciter. For example, now the last person reciting the Vedas, if he has not heard from other predecessors, then the letters and word arrangement of the Vedas do not have the ability to express, so the reciter preceding the former is like this. Therefore, the Vedas establish that the author is beginningless, so it is established that it is not man-made, some debaters say this. The second has three: if examined, the author cannot be established as beginningless, even if beginningless is established, it cannot be established as not man-made, even if not man-made is established, it cannot be established as having true meaning. The first is: like the work "Emergence of a Young Child" propagated by the composer, it is also the subject, if it is also not man-made, then it cannot be inferred accordingly, because it can be inferred, because other people other than those with the oral instructions of the predecessors are not seen to recite, so they cannot recite. Also, other Vedas whose cause is not seen to arise from a person are also the subject, and it is also correctly known that it arises from that person, so it is man-made, because it is the same as man-made worldly words and words. The pervasion is: if it is established by valid cognition that any kind of result arises from any kind of cause, then the result
