The order of the chapters on earth and the order of the chapters of this treatise. First, in the salutation, only the name of the valid means to be expressed is shown, and at the beginning of the chapter on direct perception, it is established that it is definitely two: direct and subsequent. Then, explaining the two direct and subsequent in order is the order of superiority and inferiority, because inference ultimately leads to direct perception, and what is to be measured ultimately leads to self-character. Then, among the two inferences, the first explanation of self-benefit inference is because it is the real inference, and when it relies on the sign in the case of self-benefit, there is no need for a statement of proof, but when it relies on the sign in the case of benefiting others, it depends on the statement of proof, so the inference of benefiting others is explained after that. Since the Pramāṇavārttika also has no extra need, this order is followed. Second, why is this treatise not explained in this way? Because of the need, self-benefit is explained first. What is the need? That is, the Bhagavan is a valid person, which is the meaning, because it is the ultimate object to be proven of this teaching. The opposite of that is non-meaning, because it is the ultimate object to be refuted of this treatise. Distinguishing that is to reverse on the entity, to prevent the belief that there is no valid person, and to prove the meaning of the need, that is, the omniscient all-knowing; to reverse on the proof, to prevent the belief that there is no proof, and that there is no diligence in it, and to say that the four reasons for proof arise, thereby proving that there is proof, and to say that the reasons are reversed, thereby proving that diligence is made in the means of proof, and so on. Because these depend on the inference of the power of things, before establishing the valid means, saying to distinguish between meaning and non-meaning is to say that the self-benefit inference is explained first. In this way, compared with the Compendium of Valid Cognition and the Pramāṇavārttika, because there is no chapter distinguishing between meaning and non-meaning, direct perception is explained first, and the unique characteristics of explaining self-benefit first here can also be understood, which is the intention of the author. An explanation similar to this is Yamāri. Among the four noble truths to be explained, if the indication of inference is not understood, it cannot be easily understood, so

It is said, "It is appropriate to first explain how to measure with valid cognition." And Nyima said, "In order to enter into the Four Noble Truths in this way, inference is established, and in order to show that, the second chapter, the verses of homage, are clearly explained." These are the two statements. However, the recognition of what is meaningful and what is not meaningful is different. These two clarify that the sixteen impermanent qualities, etc., on top of the Four Noble Truths are considered meaningful, and the sixteen permanent qualities, etc., are not meaningful. Moreover, since many distorted conceptions are seen in the self and other schools regarding that inference, in order to eliminate those and establish it without distortion, it is said to be explained in detail together with the self-commentary. This is the reason for writing the self-commentary for one's own sake, not the reason for teaching it first. So, what are the distorted conceptions like? In the case of the characteristics of a valid sign, some people think of other minor differences from one to six. In the case of definite numbers, some people think that besides the result arising from the collection of causes, one can infer taste from color. In the case of the connection between the sign and the subject, some people think that even if the connection is not definite, just because it is not seen in the dissimilar side, the pervasion is established. Some people think that even if the pervasion is not established on fire and smoke because the smoke comes from the head of Indra without fire, just because the concomitance is established, it is considered cause and effect. Some people think that even though what is made, impermanent, and different entities are different, they are the subject of the nature sign. Some people think that if the nature is the same, the sign and the subject are not reasonable. And as a branch of that, some people think that the sound cognition arises from the power of the object. And as a branch of that, the sound directly expresses the self-character. Some people think that the general sound of clarity, one entity, and different entities is the cause of sound cognition. In the case of the division of the nature sign, if existence is a reason, some people think that existence is the same as the probandum. In the case of the invisible sign, some people think that just because it is not seen in the scriptures, it can be established that it definitely does not exist. In the case of the fallacious reason, some people think that the meaning of what is expressed can be established from the expressing sound. And they think that the sign of what is not made by a person and does not deceive in one aspect is that the sound of knowledge has a true meaning. These are all, refuting those is
