Because of having a result, there is the establishment of a single term like "cause of eye consciousness." What is the necessity? If things like the eye, in terms of their nature as a generality, are not different from the substance, but the thing expressed by the term "cause of eye consciousness" is necessary. Because when there is no difference, that is, the common result of the three conditions, the cause of eye consciousness, in general, must be shown, and at certain times, it is for the purpose of simultaneously understanding all three conditions. This is stated in the Treasure of Reasoning: "For different things, performing actions of refutation and establishment, one can understand one aspect." Fourth, refuting the arguments of the proponents of generality and substance is divided into two: refuting the establishment of a single term by the power of generality and substance; refuting the production of a single result by the power of generality and substance. The first is divided into two: stating the opponent's view; explaining the refutation. The first is: if it is not because of a single result that a single term is established for many things, but because a single generality and substance exists, then for many appearances of cows, the term "cow" should also be established. The second is divided into three: the sign of a single existence is not established; there is no pervasiveness of the establishment of a term; although different but similar, there is also pervasiveness. The first is divided into two: refuting by examining the meaning of existence; showing the harm to existence itself. The first is divided into two: examining the two extremes and refuting them together; refuting the two extremes of the examined meaning separately. The first is: in many appearances, is the establishment of a single generality the way that the generality relies on many appearances to exist? Or is it that many appearances exist as the cause of making a single generality appear? If we examine these two situations, then it is unreasonable for the generality, because the reasons will be explained separately below. The second is divided into two: refuting existence in the way of reliance; refuting existence in the way of appearance. The first is: according to the first situation examined above, then the appearing things become not the basis of the permanent generality of things different from oneself, because there is no benefit to the permanent generality. If it is said that it is not pervasive, just as the axle does not benefit the pine tree, but it is its basis. Then the pine tree and water, etc., that rely on the axle also
