Since that mind has it, the appearing objects appear as if they were external trees that are the cause of that mind. What is not the cause of that mind appears as if it were separate from the nature of non-tree. The external trees also appear to be of the same nature, and because of attachment, one's own flesh and blood are known to be different from non-trees in one respect. Afterwards, when one realizes the difference from non-trees, one applies the term "this is a tree" to the exclusion of others that appear. Thus, the sound that is applied appears to the mind at the time of naming, and one is able to realize the exclusion of others that appear. At that time, the mind is also mistaken about the appearance of the external world, so one realizes that the meaning of the past and the future is like one thing, so there is no generality, and even if the meaning is interrupted at the time of naming, there is no fault of not understanding the meaning at the time of naming. Fourth, the expressive sound is a dharma. In order to make the listener's mind turn away from the mere meaning of doubt and enter into some definite meaning, it is well applied. It is applied for the purpose of making the listener hold the desired meaning firmly. Second, the rejection of the absence of what is to be cut off means that there is no establishment of exclusion. If it is said that even if the sound of trees and so on is established by exclusion, the sound of knowable things and so on should not be established by exclusion, because there is no non-knowable thing to be excluded, because if it is made the object of the mind, it will become knowable, and if it is not made, it cannot be excluded. However, the statement that all dharmas are knowable is established in the terminology related to other sentences, and for those who know, it is a dharma, and there are some who cut off the object of the listener's doubt. What is the word that is applied to explain the meaning? If the listener does not cut off anything other than the object of doubt, then the application of explaining the meaning will be meaningless, therefore. Third, there are five ways to examine and reject whether the opposite exists in reality: The way in which the opposite becomes expressive. Establish the proof of the scriptures on that. Refute the argument about the meaning of the scriptures. Therefore, the opposite is not a reality. Reject the meaninglessness of the sound symbol that follows. First, if the opposite that you accept is established as a reality, then in the general reality,

If it is said that if there are no similar faults in things, then there is no need or function to say it. The characteristics of trees that are different from those non-trees, such as bark, etc., appear as the same general reason. For those who are attached to the appearance of trees as external trees, applying the word "tree" to this is necessary, because the meaning-seeking person is to distinguish which tree is different from which non-tree, thereby excluding from non-trees and focusing on trees. Second, the appearance of tree-grasping conceptualization that is attached to external trees is itself the negation of trees, so it itself is the direct object of the word "tree," which has been explained in detail in the Pramana Sutra. The Pramana Sutra says, "Through the negation of others, one can understand some characteristics of that thing." And, "Words express only those things that are distinguished by the negation of others." And, "Words can eliminate the others of words and meanings, and express their own function." The meaning of the first quote is that from the word "tree," one can understand the part of the tree's thing, that is, the appearance of tree-grasping conceptualization. If you ask, why put the appearance in the thing part of the tree? The answer is: because it is established through the negation of non-trees. The meaning of the second quote is: The word "tree" expresses the thing of the tree that appears in the conceptualization that is distinguished by negating others, which has the same meaning as "these meanings that exist in knowledge." The meaning of the third quote will appear in the context of the text. Third, refuting the argument against the meaning of the first quote: For this appearance that appears in conceptualization, it does not have the slightest nature of a tree, because it is a substance of knowledge. Refuting the argument against the meaning of the second quote: If it is said that what is expressed is the thing that is distinguished by negation, then it is equivalent to admitting that the universal is the object of words. If the meaning of "the thing distinguished by negation" is that from words such as trees, by understanding the image of the tree that appears in conceptualization, one can understand the negation of non-trees, because the image itself is attached to as a tree. For the image of the tree, the other universals that are distinguished by the negation of non-trees cannot be understood by words, because the other universals

Because there is no characteristic that distinguishes things. The refutation of the argument for the third view is: If the word "tree" has two different functions, namely, excluding non-trees and establishing trees, because the word "tree" can exclude non-trees. Then, the word "tree" does not have two different functions of establishing trees and excluding non-trees, because establishing trees itself is excluding non-trees. Because trees and non-trees are mutually contradictory and not of the same nature. Fourth, the "negation" that is the actual object of words is not truly existent, because although negation is not a thing, it is seen as existing in external objects, which is only due to the delusion of consciousness. If what is negated from non-trees exists outside of the thing of trees, then it is either the thing of shaba or the thing other than shaba. If it is the former, then palasha should not become the thing of trees, because what is negated from the thing of non-trees is the thing of shaba. If it is the latter, then shaba should not become the thing of trees, because what is negated from the thing of non-trees is the thing other than shaba. Both of these situations are unacceptable, because it will be said that shaba and palasha are different from non-trees. Fifth, if the image of discrimination is expressed by words, then after saying "tree," saying the word "tree is impermanent," and the reason for establishing this conclusion will become meaningless, because the knowledge of the image of discrimination that holds trees is self-characterized, so when expressing it, impermanence, etc., will also be expressed. If you say that the image of discrimination that holds trees, when you distinguish the permanent dharma that seems to be mixed in the discriminating object, the word "tree is impermanent," only the reason established by this can play the role of cutting off, but the word "tree" cannot play the role of cutting off, because you do not have a self-characterized thing that can be cut off by the word "tree." This is pervasive, if the self-character is directly expressed by words, then through anything that expresses the self-character, the dharma of that self-character will be completely understood.
