Secondly, if two sounds express the same negation, then it would be excessive to say that there is no need to distinguish between dharma and dharmin by convention. If someone says that, then, on the dharmin of a cow, there are many distinctions such as not being a horse and not being a buffalo. From the other distinctions such as not being a buffalo, the dharma of merely not being a horse is what is abandoned, and those that are not abandoned are the dharmin. The distinction of the convention of the sound that expresses dharma and dharmin in sequence is the basis or reason for entering differently, because it is the distinction that follows the wishes of the understander of dharma and dharmin, that is, the listener. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish dharma and dharmin for the same thing, because it is for the sake of understanding the same thing in the manner of abandoning and not abandoning other distinctions. Thirdly, the terms "not a horse" and "not being a horse itself" express the general and the possessor of the general. Similarly, the terms "white cow" and "the whiteness of a cow" express quality and the possessor of quality, and the terms "cow walking" and "the walking of a cow" express action and the possessor of action. For all of these, the sound that expresses substance, i.e., dharmin, and entity, i.e., dharma, are dharmin. There is no difference in meaning in your expression, because your distinction is only that the same thing is expressed by abandoning or not abandoning other distinctions. Furthermore, because one wants to understand the meaning of the occasion by abandoning or not abandoning other distinctions, the expressing sound may be expressed with an ending of a beneficial cause, or an ending of a causative cause, or an ending of another agent, or other unspecified white, etc. Those sounds are dharmin. There is no difference in the meaning of the expressed object other than abandoning or not abandoning other distinctions, because it is merely expressing the same thing in various ways of expression. Secondly, for the Buddhist who considers the exclusion of others to be the object of sound, it is dharmin. For the Vaiśeṣika school, which wants to express the distinction related to the other meaning of the genus, the fault of expressing the same is eliminated, because there is no difference in the meaning of returning. It is pervasive, because the genus, i.e., the general, and those related to it are substance.

The grounds are indeed distinct. If one wishes to apply sound to particulars through the meaning of another generality, then these three faults will occur. What are the three? Sound, as the subject, should not be applied independently to clarity, because it applies to clarity after stating another general meaning. The distinctions that exist in clarity should not become a common basis, because the distinctions that sound has in clarity have not been abandoned. Sound, as the subject, applying to clarity should also be imputed, because another general meaning is stated. These are all stated by Dignāga. The third part has three points: it shows that the fault applies to others, it shows that one does not have that fault, and it clearly explains how it applies to others. The first point is what the Vaiśeṣika says: If dharma and the possessor of dharma are not distinct, then the distinctions of the sixth case ending and plural words, etc., would not be reasonable. If according to the views of the Vaiśeṣikas and grammarians, the sixth case ending and plural words, etc., are expressed by virtue of the distinctness of things, and do not rely on the intention to express primarily, then for those people, the possessor of dharma, the sixth case ending and the distinction of words, i.e., plural words, etc., such as "the thing of a cow is the cow itself," those words should not be applied, because there is no difference in meaning. This is a type of objection. The second point is that according to our view, any sixth case ending and plural words, etc., as the subject, can be applied even if there is no difference in meaning, because without relying on the difference of external meanings, the speaker, i.e., the expresser, determines how the difference and non-difference of meanings are the means of expression. The expresser is likewise the expresser of the difference and non-difference of meanings. The third point is that if it is thought that all sound applications of singular and plural words are caused by one or many things, then for one woman and one grain of sand, as the subject, plural words such as "the consorts" and "the sands" etc., should not be applied, because there is no different cause that has been posited as different. Also, six villages, as the subject, the singular word "row of mansions" should not be applied, because there is no single cause that has been posited as one. Or, this is to introduce what follows, for example, space, as the subject, "the nature of space" this is the sixth case ending, and "the essence of space is spa
