Therefore, I shall explain based on the oral instructions of the glorious Sakya Paṇḍita. Those who delight in the cryptic language of logic, bow your heads and listen. If there is no other contrary meaning, then the reverse characteristics will become devoid of generality. Because the self-characteristics do not follow each other, there is no general substance; and because there is no other contrary meaning, there is also no other general substance. If asked thus, then here, generality is twofold: as it is said, "Each abiding in its own nature," the commonality of self-characteristics that do not intermingle, as it is said, "Turning away from other things," not being associated with things of the same or different kind, that is, the reverse, is the similarity of things with self-characteristics that turn away from that, which is generality itself, as has been said before. That is to say, in short, dividing the same sound, from the perspective of exclusion, into the three reverses of sound, produced, and impermanent, is the generality of sound, which has already been explained. As it is said in the Treasure of Logic: "Because the object of exclusion and the scope of use are different, the same thing can have different reverses." And the necessity of dividing it in this way is also, "In order not to mistake one for another, it is divided into different aspects." Just like that. Furthermore, the meaning of "other" is, after distinguishing multiple generalities from one thing, to explain from this generality that appears both the same and different to cognition. As it is said in the Treasure of Reasoning: "For things with the same action and characteristic, due to the power of habit, there is attachment to one." And the necessity of summarizing it into one is also, "In order to establish or refute different things, it becomes possible to understand one aspect of the action." Just like that. Here, the three reverses of sound, produced, and impermanent on top of sound are all generalities. And the fact that reverse, generality, and exclusion of others have the same meaning has been clearly stated in the root and commentaries, as well as in the Treasure of Reasoning, but it does not match even a part of the way of establishing generality and particularity nowadays. Establishing one's own system has already been shown in the general sense. Therefore, as an answer to the previous doubt, the generality of distinguishing one thing into many has been explained, and here, it is based on things that are different from non-trees, that is, the various manifestations of trees. Trees that grow through lineage, in reality, the various manifestations of trees, in the consciousness of cognition, appear as one form of tree, as the subject. The various manifestations of trees appear as one form of tree, because your own nature is the form produced by habit.

It is because it obscures the individual characteristics of other appearing trees. This is pervasive. Because the obscuring conventional mind obscures the fact that the appearing trees are each different, and thus the objects of the trees appear as if they are not different, as if they are one, by some nature that is different from non-trees. The appearance of a tree that appears to conceptual thought is the subject. Because you are attached to the nature of external trees, you strongly assert that the appearing trees have a universal. Because in the face of your conceptual thought that grasps trees, the appearing trees appear as a universal that follows. Therefore, the appearance that appears to conceptual thought is the direct object of expression of the universal and the word in the face of conceptual thought itself, and all the names of the common basis and all affirmations and negations are also directly performed on this in the face of conceptual thought itself, and it is said that it is not established in reality, which means that it is not established as one has examined it, and when another subsequent conceptual thought distinguishes its mode of existence, because it is the apprehended aspect of conceptual thought, it is a self-characteristic, and the part of it that is examined as an external object is a universal, so it is said that it does not exist in reality. As it is said in the Self-Commentary: "Those who explain distinguish in that way, but those who name do not, because they act by making the appearance of the mind, which is the only object that can function, and the things to be distinguished, into one." Its meaning is as it is said in the Treasure of Reasoning: "When explaining, one is skilled by distinguishing, when acting, one obtains by confusing into one." The appearance is a universal in its own face, in meaning knowledge is a self-characteristic, the universal depends on attachment to external objects, the self-characteristic is established by appearing clearly. This is said to be my talk of understanding the secret words of conceptual thought without reversing them. Second, the appearances of trees are the subject. That universal that is fabricated by that conceptual thought does not exist for you in the ultimate sense. Because you do not follow each other, there is no one universal substance, and there is no appearance of another universal meaning that follows. Do you not think that the appearance that appears to conceptual thought is a universal? Why does it not exist in the ultimate sense? The appearance is the subject. How can its own nature, without relying on the nature of delusion, follow other trees?
