Moreover, in refutation, anything that is not established on the basis of non-establishment, such as non-establishment in either subsequent affirmation or negation, is called a fault. If someone asks: Since this is the case, why is it not said that having doubt about refutation is a fault, but rather it is said "depending on the circumstances"? The answer is: It is not that the non-establishment of the basis is not a fault of refutation, but rather that having doubt is not said to be a fault. Because immediately after that, whatever definitely states both cases, that itself is establishment or refutation, and not stating establishment or having doubt in either case. Because of this saying. Otherwise, it would become saying contradictions. The fifth example is, when arguing whether sound is permanent or impermanent, as the uncommon characteristic of the object of dispute, the audible phenomenon, subject. It is established as being contrary to both permanent and impermanent, because it is merely not seen in both of them. If admitted, then, this subject will become a reason capable of distinguishing whether sound is permanent or impermanent, because no matter whether sound is used as proof of permanent or impermanent, it possesses the property of the subject and the pervasion of refutation. If admitted, then it contradicts what the teacher said, "How can the audible phenomenon itself become a distinguishing reason?" If someone says that it cannot prevent both of these, if it prevents both of these, then, because of other valid cognition, negating one directly contradictory thing on one basis, then the other necessarily established valid cognition will cause harm, therefore it does not possess the unharmful object, then, in that case, this is merely not seeing in the dissimilar side, and not necessarily establishing. Because preventing both permanent and impermanent on audible sound, other valid cognition will cause harm, similarly, other reasons are merely not seen in the dissimilar side, if arguing for necessary non-existence, then other valid cognition may also cause harm. The sixth example is, the Vaisheshikas believe that neutral tactile sensation is the quality of wind alone, therefore for the seen earth, water, and fire, subject. It does not possess neutral tactile sensation, because neutral tactile sensation is not seen. This reason, subject. The establishment of the pervasion of refutation is without error, because it is merely not seen in the dissimilar side. If admitted, then, the teacher said in "The Division of Wind": "If merely because of not seeing, one prevents tactile sensation on seen things, then that is also unreasonable." etc.
