Whatever attachment arises from seeing virtues, attachment arises towards the object that sees virtues and is related to them; hatred arises towards the object that sees faults and is related to them; similarly, jealousy and miserliness, etc., are abandoned because those virtues and faults are not seen in the object, and not like removing a thorn, by abandoning external objects to be abandoned. Secondly, for the self-grasping one who sees self-attachment as a fault, what can prevent the fruit of attachment to the self? It cannot be prevented, because there exists the complete cause of attachment to the self, which is to regard the self as having virtues. Regarding the self as having virtues is the cause of attachment to the self, because attachment to the self itself is due to seeing virtues, and in fact, it is due to seeing the virtues of the self that one is attached to the self. Thirdly, what faults are seen in attachment to the self? If it is said that it should be abandoned because it is the basis of suffering, then, for this attachment to the self, even if it is the basis of suffering, it should not be separated from attachment, because even if it is the basis of suffering, it is always seen as mine. For example, even if the self is the basis of suffering, it is the cause of the mind that grasps at the self, so it should not be separated from attachment. If it is said that the self cannot be established as having faults, because if the self and my things are not friends, then the self alone is not the cause of suffering, then, then attachment to the self and my things are also the same, they should be without faults like the self, because if the self is not a friend, then you alone are not the cause of suffering. If that is admitted, then neither attachment to the self nor the self should be separated from attachment, because both of them are without faults. The second part has four points: one cannot abandon by meditating on the suffering of the aggregates, etc.; one cannot abandon by knowing that the aggregates and the self are different; one cannot abandon by being disgusted with suffering; and refuting the statement that suffering is the object of meditation. The first part has two points: stating the view, and explaining the refutation. The first point: If, like abandoning a limb bitten by a snake by meditating on it as the source of suffering, even if there is self-grasping, also to my

If attachment and what is mine are contemplated as the cause of suffering, they will be abandoned. Then, the pervasion that one is necessarily attached to oneself is not established. If this is questioned. The second (part) has two divisions: refuting the example, and refuting the meaning. The first (refuting the example) is: This limb seized by a snake is the subject. You will not be abandoned merely by contemplating it as suffering, because you abandon it by destroying the thought of what is mine. Conversely, if you have the thought of what is mine, you will not abandon it. The second (refuting the meaning) has seven divisions: If there is grasping at what is mine, it is impossible to abandon it. If what is mine is abandoned, there is no characteristic of what is mine. If there is self-grasping, attachment to what is mine will arise. The effort of contemplating suffering will become meaningless. If the self has no faults, there is no place to be separated from attachment. Knowing faults alone cannot abandon attachment. Because there is no harm to the cause, it cannot be abandoned. The first (if there is grasping at what is mine, it is impossible to abandon it) has two divisions: If there is grasping at what is mine, there is no separation from attachment. Refuting the establishment of destroying grasping at what is mine. The first (if there is grasping at what is mine, there is no separation from attachment) is: That which has self-grasping, knowing what is mine as faulty, is the subject. Where does the separation from attachment to that which is mine come from? It is impossible to be separated, because what will dispel the thought of considering what is mine as one's own? It is impossible to dispel, because what is mine, such as the senses, is the basis of enjoyment and is regarded as the very cause of benefiting oneself. This is a pervasive relationship. Because for hair, nails, etc., separated from the body, they are not regarded as a cause of benefiting oneself, so a mind of aversion will arise. And for hair, etc., existing on another's body, because they are regarded as a cause of benefiting oneself, a mind with attachment will arise. All of this is manifestly established by everyone. The second (refuting the establishment of destroying grasping at what is mine) has two divisions: Refuting destruction by contemplating suffering. Refuting destruction by generating suffering. The first (refuting destruction by contemplating suffering) is: If one is attached to oneself, etc., by contemplating it as suffering, thereby abandoning the thought of it as one's own, then what will dispel one's own thought? If this is questioned, attachment to oneself, etc., for that, this is the subject. Even if it has been seen as suffering, one will not abandon one's own thought, because for you, the cause of the arising of one's own thought is because there is a connection of oneself and aggregates, etc., and the connection remains the same as before, even if it has been seen as suffering. The reason is accepted. This is refuting the view of the Vaisheshika school.
