If we follow the reasoning that "desire is the cause of arising (samsara)," since we have not seen desire without a body arising, if we consider the body to be the cause of desire as well, then, O Lokayatas, you yourselves become an obstacle to your own assertion that there is no past or future life. Because you previously promised that there is no past or future life, and later you said that the body and desire, the former is the cause of the latter desire and body. If you say, desire, the property, is not the cause of the body, because desire arises simultaneously with the arising of the body, because you see the body arising, but you did not see desire before that. Then, the body is also, the property, not the cause of desire, it follows, because it arises simultaneously with desire. If you admit this, then desire is not without a cause, nor does it arise from another cause other than the body, therefore it is established that it arises from a similar cause. In this way, the first desire of this life, the property, it is established that a similar cause existed before it. Because it is an equal condition, that is, it arises from a similar cause. Third, if only desire is the cause of arising, then "ignorance, karma, and desire are born from the treasury of knowledge," thus it contradicts the statement that arising has three causes. If you say this, ignorance, that is, ignorance, the property, is also the cause of rebirth, but it is not mentioned here, because it is not necessarily a rebirth. Desire, the property, there is a reason why you are said to be the cause here, because it is what urges the continuum of aggregates to be reborn, and it is the immediate cause of arising. Karma, the property, is not suitable to be said to be the cause here, because even if there is karma, if it is without the moisture of desire, it is not certain that there will be arising. Therefore, these treatises generally establish suffering and the cause of suffering, and they prevent dissimilar causes and establish similar causes. Among these causes, there are three: ignorance, desire, and karma, among which the other two do not necessarily cause suffering only in the future life, therefore, here, the main function of the accomplisher is that desire becomes the cause, which is the focus here. Third, establishing the cessation of suffering, explaining the truth of cessation, there are four points: establishing liberation from suffering; refuting disputes about the liberated one; refuting disputes about the manner of liberation; refuting that bondage and liberation are done by the self.

Firstly, the main cause of suffering, which is craving, is impermanent because it is related to ignorance and other causes. This is universal, because ignorance and other causes may have obstacles or lack sufficient conditions. Secondly, some people think that considering the existence of a substance of "self," sentient beings cannot be liberated from samsara because they are of the nature of samsara, just as fire cannot escape warmth. To this, this inference does not harm Buddhists, because Buddhists can consistently answer that their claim and reason are not established, because there is no "self." Then, how should samsara and liberation be defined? Merely considering the collection of suffering as a state associated with causes is called samsara, and merely considering the state that no longer arises after the causes have been eliminated is called liberation. If someone says that because the "self" of the samsaric being and the liberated being does not exist, individuals should not strive to escape samsara and attain liberation. If speaking from the ultimate sense, this is acceptable. But if speaking from the conventional sense, this argument is not established. For example, it is reasonable for individuals to strive in the conventional sense to escape samsara and attain liberation, because as long as attachment to the "self" has not been eliminated, and the aggregates attached to the "self" are still tormented by suffering, then the "self" is considered to be suffering, and does not abide in the nature of happiness, so in the conventional sense, the "self" is samsara. Although the "self" of the liberated being does not exist ultimately, in order to destroy the false clinging to "self" and "mine," the effort of the aggregates is considered to be the effort of the "self" in the conventional sense. The key point is that, except for the Many Honored Ones, all three schools of realists consider the "self," the person, sentient beings, and individuals not to be substances, so ultimately bondage and liberation are unreasonable, but the aggregates are substances, so ultimately bondage and liberation are reasonable. In the conventional sense, the "self" is the agent of bondage and liberation, because when the aggregates suffer, the "self" is considered to be suffering, and when the aggregates are liberated from suffering, the "self" is considered to be liberated from suffering. The Many Honored Ones and the Outsiders consider the "self" to be a substance, so ultimately bondage and liberation are reasonable. Distinguishing between the aggregates and the "self" as to whether they exist as substances, and the function of the aggregates
