That which does not grasp is said to be "already grasped but not grasped," and "for that which does not generate certainty, all aspects are not allowed as an aim, therefore it can be said to be non-valid cognition." Otherwise, it is not. Regarding the meaning of these statements, some ancient scholars believe that it is direct perception that is certain, and they reject the statement that "not generating certainty is also non-valid cognition," which is not reasonable. Because in the Buddha-ground, it would become non-valid cognition, because there is no cause for generating certainty there. If it is not established, then if the wisdom of the Buddha is direct perception, it is not pervasive. Therefore, the meaning of these is that if all conventional valid cognitions are those that lead to certainty by either self-power or other-power, then it is the meaning of pervasiveness. It has already been extensively explained in the general meaning. The second has two parts: If there is a difference, then the certainty of absence is established. Explaining the distinctions of establishing the certainty of absence. The first is: If one wonders whether it is impossible to understand the certainty of absence from the sign of non-observation. Then it becomes the excellence of the sign, that is, the non-observation of that which has the distinction of being able to appear, some of which cause the understanding of the certainty of absence, and for this, valid cognition becomes a correct sign, because if it is possible to appear and is not observed, then it is pervasive with the certainty of absence. If one asks, then doesn't the saying "non-observation does not establish absence" contradict this? The answer is, it does not contradict. Because for that which exists, but by its own nature, that is, by its own essence, cannot be known by seeing, and also cannot be known by the knowable sign, non-observation does not establish the certainty of absence, because for that which exists, valid cognition is not pervasive with observation. This reasoning is because it is a statement. The second has two parts: Establishing the certainty of absence by negating the five relations. Establishing the certainty of absence by observing the five contradictions. The first has two parts: Establishing by negating the cause and the pervader. Establishing by negating the nature of being able to appear. The first is: If on the dharma of the non-appearing non-observed sign, the reversal of the relationship of arising from that is established, then how is the relationship established for the reason of the non-observed that is able to appear? The answer is, for the non-observed reason of cause and pervader, among the two of following and reversing in the relationship of arising from that and the relationship of being one entity, the reversal is actually established. And all the other non-observed reasons that are able to appear are ultimately said to establish the object to be negated as the certainty of absence through the door of the non-observation by valid cognition, therefore ultimately the relationship of being one entity is actually established, as it is said.

In terms of explaining these aspects in a sequential manner, if one does not know the cause of smoke—fire, then, non-apprehension (non-perception) is the subject. On some basis, the result—smoke, is established as non-existent, because the way of establishing it possesses three conditions. For the non-apprehension of the nature of trees, it is also the subject. On some basis, the nature of the meaning of merely trees, is taken as the characteristic of non-existence of shawa, this characteristic is correct, because the way of establishing it possesses three conditions. That is to say, if it exists on some basis, then through the non-apprehension of the cause and pervader, one can understand that the result and the pervaded do not exist, otherwise it is not so, because if the non-apprehension of the cause and pervader that cannot appear, then the non-existence of the result and the pervaded is not pervasive. The second case is, if appearance is possible, such as a vase, the reason for not seeing the vase is that obscuration etc. cannot occur, then, appearance possible is the subject. If the entity of the appearance possible vase exists, then from the characteristic of being able to be seen but not being seen, one can understand that on some basis the entity of the appearance possible vase does not exist, because if the appearance possible vase is not seen, then it pervades non-existence. The second case is, cold touch is the subject. The contradiction that you and it cannot exist simultaneously is taken as the characteristic, therefore it can be determined that on some basis you are non-existent, because even if there exists a contradictory entity that cannot exist simultaneously with you, it will hinder your existence. The third case has five points: 1. Grasping three meanings to establish non-contradiction; 2. Refuting that the meaning of sound is self-characterized; 3. If the meaning of sound is refuted, it will become a fault; 4. Showing that the object of investigation is only self-characterized; 5. Eliminating the doubt of contradicting the scriptures. The first point, some say, using the characteristic of non-apprehension to prevent the determination of existence, if establishing the determination of non-existence, then Dignāga said, the primary thing is not existent, because it is non-apprehended. This said characteristic is not the characteristic of non-apprehension, because it cannot establish the determination of non-existence or cannot prevent the determination of existence. If the primary thing exists, it cannot be refuted, and the words saying non-existence are unreasonable. If it does not exist, because the subject does not exist, then that characteristic has no basis, and the word primary thing is also not applicable. If one says so, then, from the beginningless habit, completely established by the discrimination arising from the previous previous ones, that is, the dharma of the meaning of the fabricated sound, is the subject. There are three forms: existence depends on things, and
