Therefore, if it is added, it becomes meaningless, so it is therefore. Third, refuting the examination of whether the opposite exists in things, there are five points: the way the opposite can be expressed; citing scriptural arguments for this; refuting disputes over the meaning of the scriptures; therefore, the opposite does not exist in things; refuting that later sound symbols are meaningless. The first point is: if the opposite that you believe exists in things, then there will be the same fault in expression as with the proponents of universal entities; if it does not exist in things, then expressing it has no necessity or function. If you say so, then, for those characteristics of trees that are different from non-trees, such as bark, etc., the common reason that appears similarly, that is, the things that manifest the image of trees, clinging to external trees, applying the sound "tree" is necessary. Because the meaning-seeker is to distinguish which tree is different from which non-tree, thereby entering the tree by reversing the non-tree. The second point is that the image of tree-holding discrimination clinging to external trees is itself the opposite of trees, so it itself is the direct object of expression of the sound "tree," which has been elaborated in detail in the treatise on valid cognition. The treatise on valid cognition says: "Through the opposite of others, some parts of that thing can be understood." And "Sounds only express those things that are distinguished by the opposite of others." And "Sounds both exclude the others of sounds and meanings, and express their own meanings." The meaning of the first scripture is that from the sound "tree," the thing-part of the tree, that is, the image of tree-holding discrimination, can be understood. If you ask why the image should be placed in the thing-part of the tree, then the answer is: it is placed through the opposite of non-trees. The meaning of the second scripture is: through the sound "tree," the thing of the tree that appears in discrimination, distinguished by excluding others, is expressed, that is, it has the same meaning as "these meanings that exist in knowledge." The meaning of the third scripture will appear in the context of the text. Third, refuting the dispute over the meaning of the first scripture: for this image that appears in discrimination, there is also the argument that it has none of the self-nature of a tree, because it is a substance of knowledge. Refuting the dispute over the meaning of the second scripture: if expressing things distinguished by the opposite, then it is equivalent to thinking that the universal has the object of sound. If you say so, then expressing things distinguished by the opposite

Moreover, the meaning of the word "tree" is also the image of a tree that appears in conceptual thought from the sounds of wood and so on. Through conceptual thought itself, one can understand the difference from other non-trees, because the image itself is attached to the tree. For the image of the tree, as the subject, it is impossible to understand other commonalities that are different from non-trees through sound, because other commonalities are not your characteristics. Refuting the argument of the third view: If it is said that the word "tree" has two different functions, excluding non-trees and establishing trees, because the word "tree" excludes non-trees. Then, the word "tree," as the subject, is also not performing two different functions of both establishing trees and excluding non-trees, because establishing trees itself is excluding non-trees, because trees and non-trees are contradictory things that are not of the same nature. Fourth, this "otherness" that is the object of sound does not exist ultimately, because although this "otherness" is not a thing, it is seen as having external objects, which is merely a confusion of consciousness. If the "otherness" from non-trees exists outside of the tree's object, then is it the object of the shala tree, or the object other than the shala tree? If it is the former, then the palasha tree will not become the object of the tree, because the object that is different from the object of the non-tree is the object of the shala tree. If it is the latter, then the shala tree will not become the object of the tree, because the object that is different from the object of the non-tree is the object other than the shala tree. Both of these situations are unacceptable, because the shala tree and the palasha tree will be said to be different from this non-tree. Fifth, if the image of conceptual thought is expressed through sound, then after saying "tree," saying the sound "tree is impermanent," and the reason for establishing it in this way, will become meaningless, because the knowledge of the image of conceptual thought that holds the tree is self-characterizing, so when expressing it, it will also express impermanence and so on. If you think so, then the image of conceptual thought that holds the tree, as the subject, when you cut off the permanent that appears before your conceptual thought,
