That is because you cannot produce smoke. If you have the nature of producing smoke, then you must have fire. If you do not have the nature of producing smoke, then how can smoke arise from you? It will not arise. Therefore, cause and effect, as the subject of debate. The cause produces its own effect, and the effect arises from its own cause, in this way mutually determining their nature. If the effect is the producer, then the effect must be the nature of the cause. If the effect is not the nature of the cause, then the effect will not arise. Therefore, just as the nature of the cause itself is directly seen, the effect, such as smoke, as the subject of debate. Even if you are seen, it may be possible to recognize that its cause exists on some basis because it is used as a sign. Because on some basis, in order to prove the cause, the three modes are complete. Thirdly, if there are many different collections of causes that produce one kind of result, such as different water and milk producing one rotten result, then, water and milk, as the subject of debate. Just as you produce one rotten result, how can one result be produced from many different collections of causes? It cannot be produced. Because you have the same kind of ability in liquid, thereby producing one rotten result. Because both of you must produce one kind of result for the reason that you are the same kind of cause. Then, are water and milk different or the same? Or do they become two natures of different and the same? Because the ability is the same and the appearance is different. Water and milk, as the subject of debate. They are not two natures of different and the same. Because in ultimate truth, they are merely different substances. Then, how can they be the same kind in liquid? Because in ultimate truth, they each abide in their own essence. Even though the substances are different, they, as the subject of debate. Can be said to be the same kind in liquid, because the mind that is determined to be the nature of liquid is the same in meaning, so the mind operates on liquid without difference. Water and milk, even though the substances are different, produce one kind of mind, so they are the same kind.

As stated, although the various categories of fire are different, in terms of the ability to burn, etc., all aspects that serve as the basis or cause for recognizing fire are the same. Therefore, smoke, as the subject, you, as a sign, can lead to the recognition of mere fire in some instances, because that mere fire generates you. Fourth, smoke, as the subject, is not mistaken about mere fire, because as a component of the definitive cognition that recognizes fire as being of the same kind, the mere fire that serves as the cause arises from dependence on other conditions, such as firewood, for your arising. Just as smoke is not mistaken about fire, other effects, as the subject, are similarly not mistaken about their respective causes, because if the effect of a cause were mistaken about that cause, it would not be the effect of that cause. Furthermore, if something is not fire, then what arises from it is not smoke; and if what arises from it is indeed smoke, then it necessarily becomes the presence of fire. In this way, smoke is not mistaken about the presence of fire, because whatever component or basis gives rise to the change of smoke and firewood is what is designated as the presence of fire. Second, there is no ascertainment of a single connection of self: life, etc., as the subject, you are also not a natural reason that proves a living body to possess a self, because there is no valid means of ascertaining the connection that you and the self are of the same nature, or that you do not arise without the self. Universally, all natural reasons must rely on how the reason itself arises from its cause as the nature of the dharma to be proven, so that it must be known that without the nature of the dharma to be proven, the reason itself does not arise. For example, as stated above, "Destruction and being made, because there is no cause, it is destruction," and so on. Therefore, since there is no connection between the self and life, it is unreasonable to prove the self from life. Third, applying that method to other similar things is to show that life, etc., which are considered to be the opposite of having sentience, are not signs, but are the same as audible things. In the division of the subject, Acharya Dignāga did not cite life, etc., as examples, but cited audible things as examples, rather than life, etc., as reasons.
