Now, let's begin to explain, refuting other viewpoints. First case: If sometimes the prior consciousness has the ability to generate subsequent consciousness, but this ability gradually diminishes, then the wisdom that holds the prior consciousness will not arise, and therefore it will transfer to other objects, is that so? Second case: When the prior wisdom exhausts its ability to generate subsequent wisdom, as the nature of things, the subsequent wisdom will not transfer to the object, because where does the subsequent wisdom that holds the object come from? The reason is established, because without the prior capable wisdom, the subsequent wisdom will not arise. If the prior attention clings to other objects, such as form, then the ability of that consciousness to generate the holding of sound, etc., will be weakened, and therefore it will not be possible to understand the arising of the consciousness that holds sound, etc. Then, does this contradict the simultaneous arising of various different types of active consciousness from the Alaya consciousness? Generally speaking, although various different types of active consciousness can arise simultaneously from the Alaya consciousness, when the mind is particularly attached to form alone, as the nature of things, other holdings of sound, etc., will not arise from the Alaya consciousness, because the very clear mind is particularly attached to form alone, and this single mind will weaken the Alaya consciousness's ability to generate holdings of sound, etc. If the prior capable consciousness is not the cause of the subsequent consciousness, then the subsequent other consciousness, as the nature of things, will not depend on the prior consciousness's clinging to the object, because the prior consciousness is not your cause. Furthermore, consciousness, as the nature of things, your subsequent moment completely depends on the prior moment, because you arise one by one in sequence, also because it is the arising consciousness. Third case: The Vaibhashika says that consciousness is permanent, like a dust particle, only one, therefore, entering the eye faculty and clinging to form, that is, following form, it will not enter other ear faculties, etc., therefore, other multiple consciousnesses will not arise, but one consciousness will definitely arise one by one, not arising one by one from the ability of prior wisdom, is that so? A person who can see things, as the nature of things, cannot necessarily generate only one wisdom at a time because the reason is that consciousness must be unique, because at certain times multiple wisdoms such as holding form will arise simultaneously. Furthermore, the five objects and the five faculties are complete.

If it is said that the previous consciousness applies equally to all five objects, that is, there is no particular attachment to any one of them, then in all cases, the subject, you will not generate cognition of other objects, because you have only one consciousness, and it is the same. Furthermore, all previous and subsequent consciousnesses, the subject, will arise simultaneously, because merely being associated with the permanent self and consciousness will cause them to arise. If it is said that because there is only one agent (consciousness), only one cognition of action and result will arise, and not all will arise simultaneously, then, a single lamp, the subject, just as many people can see it, it will not generate many self-apprehending consciousnesses, because it is one. Furthermore, if the permanent consciousness does not generate many cognitions, then it will generate them simultaneously; if not, then that consciousness, the subject, will not have the ability to gradually generate many minds, because afterwards it is no different from not generating many minds. This reason for preventing the permanent consciousness from generating many minds, the subject, also refutes the view of the Tirthikas that the permanent body can gradually generate minds, and the view of the Samkhyas that the permanent Purusha of intelligence can gradually enjoy objects, because if the permanent body and Purusha are the agents of many minds and actions, then they will act simultaneously; if not, then they cannot act gradually either. If it is said that each mind is definitely generated from the merit of the self—volition, then, if volition exists permanently from the beginning, then all minds will arise simultaneously; if it does not exist, then from what does it arise later? If it is said that it arises from the previous mind itself, then, that is indeed the case. Buddhists, the subject, your own view that the subsequent mind arises from the previous mind is established, because the subsequent mind arises from volition, and it arises from the previous mind. Secondly, if the previous mind is the immediate cause of the subsequent mind that cognizes itself, but is not the object of apprehension, so the subsequent mind shifts to another object, then, the previous mind, the subject, you possess the characteristic of being the object of apprehension of the subsequent mind, because you yourself are the direct generator of the subsequent mind that cognizes itself. This is pervasive, because in general, for things that are objects of apprehension, the aspect of being an object of apprehension is different from directly generating the consciousness that cognizes itself.
