Therefore, since a definite cognition of something will not arise, it is only from the mind experiencing itself that the definite cognition "this mind saw this thing" arises. Third, again establishing self-awareness with the reasoning of the Sutra school, there are two parts: establishing self-awareness with the reason of recollection; refuting the view that what has already been established is established again. The first part is: the reason of recollection stated by the teacher not only establishes the two ways, but also establishes the awareness of self-nature, that is: consciousnesses that grasp form, etc., are things that are experienced when they themselves exist, because of later recollection. The second part is divided into two parts: stating the opponent's view; refuting the opponent's view. The first part is: if one establishes that one has experienced oneself from the reason of recollection, then it is uncertain. If one only establishes that one has experienced it, then it is a re-establishment of what has already been established, that is, the later consciousness is known by another consciousness, that is, it has been experienced, and from this recollection arises, if one thinks like this, then: the second part is divided into two parts: the former consciousness does not hold long, etc., it should follow; the latter consciousness does not transfer to the object, it should follow. The first part is divided into two parts: refuting with reasoning that one auditory consciousness holds long, etc.; if many successive consciousnesses hold long, etc., then it contradicts the commitment. The first part is divided into two parts: presenting the consequence; refuting other answers. The first part is: for the answer to that view, temporarily setting aside the infinite reasoning stated by Dignāga, and answering it oneself, that is: if the consciousness that holds long, etc., letters has not experienced it, then it will not be recollected later. If it has been experienced, then does the auditory consciousness hold the various parts of long, etc., letters with one non-successive consciousness, and then the experiencer arises? Or does the auditory consciousness hold them with many successive consciousnesses, and then the experiencer arises? If according to the first case, then, one auditory consciousness, for long letters, very long letters, and short letters, etc., even the completion of one letter cannot be held, it should follow, because in a long time, one letter is formed, and it does not exist. This is because the auditory consciousness is momentary, and even the shortest letter takes the time of blinking, which is the time of many moments. The second part is divided into four parts: without succession, holding long is contradictory; having succession, producing non-succession is contradictory; the former consciousness staying between the beginning and the end is too much; letters arising non-successively at the same time is contradictory. The first part is: if it is not established, then, long, etc., letters
