Establishing Self-Awareness. First, even with the reasoning that establishes the two aspects as stated by the teachers, self-awareness is mostly established incidentally, because when the apprehended aspect of the mind itself appearing as an object is established, what is to be experienced is established as its own nature. Second, there are four: establishing through experiencing the apprehended aspect of one's own nature; establishing through analyzing the clear appearance of white, etc.; establishing through negating that one's own mind is not manifest; and establishing through negating that others experience. First, there are two: stating the proof, and refuting others' answers. First, when the two aspects of knowledge becoming its own nature and appearing as an object are established, the subject, self-awareness, is established, because what is to be experienced is established as the nature of knowledge. Second, there are three: showing that there is no experience because what is to be experienced has ceased; if there is no self-experience, it contradicts direct perception; and being harmed by the inference that there is no experience of other objects. First, if the mind is established as having two aspects, but it is not established as self-awareness, because the previous mind is not experienced by itself, but is experienced by the later mind that appears with its aspect, then, the entity of the previous mind, that is, the mind with the aspect, the subject, how does the later mind experience the previous knowledge? It should not be experienced, because the previous knowledge has ceased in your time. The later mind, the subject, all experiences will be reversed, that is, no knowable will be known, because there is no own nature or experience. Second, for the mind that grasps forms, etc., the grasper, that is, the experiencing mind, the subject, should appear as the apprehended aspect, because it is the mind that grasps other objects in its own realm. For example, the sense consciousnesses, etc., that have the appearance of other objects such as forms, etc., because they grasp other objects in their own realm, they appear outwardly, that is, they should appear as the apprehended aspect, which is universally established. It cannot be admitted, because self-awareness sees that it always appears inwardly to its own object of understanding, that is, it proceeds with the aspect of grasping. Third, there are two: stating the inference, and refuting the refutation of faults. First, whatever knowledge appears as the aspect of an object such as blue, etc., the subject, it does not experience that object, because it itself is the object.

Therefore, the conclusion that "it is not experiencing appearance" cannot be obtained either. The second part has five aspects: refuting that similar experience is the basis for establishment; refuting that mind-like similar experience is the basis for establishment; refuting by analyzing the meaning of similarity; refuting that arising similarity is the basis for establishment; and refuting the establishment of experience with certainty. The first point is: if it is said that the above inference does not have pervasiveness, because what other basis is there for establishing the experience of things other than being similar to that thing? Since there is no other basis, if it is asserted that the experience of things is solely through being similar to things, then all mind-like things that are similar to things should become objects of mutual experience, because they are similar to each other. The second point is: if it is said that merely being similar to things is not the characteristic of experiencing things, but rather the similarity that has become the essence of that mind is the basis for establishing experience, then, being so, the similarity to things that has become the essence of that mind should not be the experience of things, because the experience is the apprehended aspect of the mind itself appearing as things. Therefore, the apprehended aspect of the mind itself appearing as things should be the cause of the arising of aspects similar to things, and not an object to be designated, because the object of experience is the appearance of the thing itself, and that experience is that experience. This is pervasive, because the similarity to things in the essence of the mind becomes the basis for distinguishing actions, understanding things, and the functions of objects such as "this is a shape" and "this is a sound" in other worlds, but it cannot establish experience. If the mind only experiences the arising of the form of things and does not experience other things, then why is it said that one experiences external blue things, etc.? The mind that appears as things, merely by the term of experiencing blue things, etc., cannot prove the experience of blue things, etc., because the self-nature of the mind's own essence experiences the appearance of blue things, etc., and the external blue things, etc., are mistaken as objects of experience, therefore there is the saying of experiencing external blue things, etc., but not because of experiencing the external self-nature. Then, what valid cognition is there to prove the existence of external things? Because there is no valid cognition to prove it. If the mind is the entity of blue things, etc., that is, the arising of the image, then apart from that, external things cannot be seen.
