Because it appears as distinct. Furthermore, is that category permanent or impermanent? If impermanent, then that phenomenon should not become a category, because it is not multiple moments. If permanent, then that phenomenon, how can it be a factor that generates memory consciousness, it should not be, because it is permanent. If you assert, then its object of apprehension will be lost. Second, if you say that in memory, although the category of past things does not appear, the non-associated formations—name and sign—appear, then, name etc. phenomenon, you should not be the object of apprehension of memory consciousness, because you were previously refuted in "if you say name etc.", therefore. Third, this mode of memory consciousness does not possess true meaning as its object of apprehension, because it is not established to arise from the power of the object of apprehension, because it arises from meaningless mere intention and subsequent association. If memory consciousness has the appearance of meaning, then how is its cause—experience—the appearance of meaning? This consciousness with the appearance of focusing on the past also arises from previously experiencing meaning, that is, realization, because it is remembering meaning. If you think that the cause of memory—experience—is also empty of the appearance of meaning, then how can that memory possess that appearance of meaning, it should not, because any memory arises from experience without the appearance of meaning. Fourth, if you say that memory does not arise from experience, but arises directly from the object of memory, then that memory should not arise directly from its own object of memory, because at the time of its direct cause, its own object of memory does not exist. If you say that the reason why memory has the appearance of meaning is because it arises from meaning, then in that case, experiential direct perception should also become possessed of the appearance of meaning, because it arises from meaning. Furthermore, the appearance that appears in memory is not the appearance directly given by meaning, because it is devoid of a clear appearance, that is, it is emptiness. Fifth, if the appearance that appears in memory consciousness is a thing different from consciousness, then that appearance, just as it appears to the rememberer himself, should also be cognized by other beings located in that place.
