This is: Establishing the thesis, establishing the argument, and establishing the logical statement. First, the appearance of the three—apprehender, apprehended, and self-awareness—as distinct entities in a single mind is an unreal appearance. If it is not so, but real, then are the various appearances in a single mind real as multiple entities or as a single entity? If the former, the indivisible, single essence of the mind, as the subject, how can the various appearances that appear to you as having various natures be real as multiple entities? It should be unreal, because you are the nature of a single mind. If not pervasive, the mind, as the subject, you are originally one, but you are destroyed and become multiple, because appearing as multiple is real as multiple. If the latter, the various appearances in a single mind, as the subject, should not be real as a single entity, because they appear as multiple in an unconfused mind. If not pervasive, happiness, suffering, and so on, other and other dharmas, as the subject, should be destroyed and become other natures, because of the non-pervasiveness. Furthermore, these appearances, as the subject, should not be real as a single entity, because there is no seeing of a single entity. It is pervasive, because the valid cognition sees things without difference, so it will definitely be determined as without difference, otherwise it cannot be established as without difference. Second, the objects of appearance that appear in the consciousness of objects, as the subject, when analyzed by reason, in reality, they are not real entities, because they do not possess the nature of real single and multiple entities. All of the above is that the Yogacara school, by way of imputation, establishes the apprehended appearances that appear in the consciousness of objects as unreal. And, based on this, the apprehending appearances and self-awareness are also established as the tenets of unreal. And the view that the apprehending appearances and self-awareness that exist based on the self-illuminating consciousness are real will be explained below. The difference between true and false appearances is the unmistakable point that appears in the major treatises, and this is the only one. If you seek outside of this, it will not go beyond the category of error. Fourth, if according to the view of this Yogacara school, it is unreasonable for the confusion of the duality of the apprehended and the apprehender to arise in the consciousness where the duality of the apprehended and the apprehender is not established, because the cause of the confusion of the duality of the apprehended and the apprehender, that is, seeing the apprehended and the apprehender as real and in accordance with the Dharma, does not exist, because for this practitioner, there is not even one instance of seeing the nature of the real apprehended and the apprehender.

Generally, illusions arise not without a cause. Like mistaking fish skin for silver, merely seeing similarities and clinging to something that is not its owner as its owner, this is how illusions commonly arise for worldly people. If it is said that the arising of illusion does not necessarily require seeing similarities beforehand, because illusion can arise even without seeing similarities, it is because the illusion of mistaking the grasped and the grasper as one, which arises from being deluded by inner ignorance, arises from inner faults, and therefore its nature or essence itself appears as inverted. For example, like seeing hair strands by someone with cataracts. The second part has three points: Establishing self-awareness by experiencing the nature of clinging appearances; applying the measure and result of self-awareness to all knowledge; and abandoning statements that contradict self-awareness as a valid measure. The first point is: Then, in the system of appearance-only, if the grasped appearance is false, and the self-awareness attached to it is also false, then what is the nature of self-awareness and its measure and result? For those who assert that appearances are false, the mind itself is the subject. What you consider to be the appearance of grasping that completely severs is the awareness of self-nature, because you are the nature of that grasping appearance that completely severs. Therefore, the appearance of grasping is the subject, and self-awareness is its proof, because it is able to represent self-awareness. The second point is: In the system that asserts appearances are false, when the self-nature of the mind is placed as an object, the self is the measured object, and the grasping appearance that completely severs it is the measuring object, which is a valid measure, and the self-awareness that experiences it abides as the result. This is the subject, and it should be applied to all minds, because the measure and result of the nature of self-awareness abide here. For example, in the system of the Sutra school, when desire and so on are made the measured object, the measure and result of the direct perception of self-awareness that experiences it abides here. The same reasoning is that, in the system of the Sutra school, the direct perception of self-awareness that experiences desire and so on, for those desires and so on, is able to experience its own nature, because it is the nature of experience. Likewise, in the system that asserts appearances are false, whatever mind there is is the subject, it is able to be experienced, it is a valid measure, and self-nature is the measured object.
