It is unreasonable because it lacks both the knowable and the knower. If asked why, the consciousness that appears as blue, etc., is also a subject. Even though the knowable and the knower have no other meaning, it is inherently cognitive because it arises as the nature of cognition itself. For example, the illuminator arises as its own nature, so when the illuminator, the lamp, arises as the nature of extreme clarity, it does not have both the illuminated and the illuminator, but it considers its own nature to be the illuminator. Fourth, if the knowable of the consciousness that appears as blue, etc., the knowledge that appears as blue, etc., is different in meaning from it, then the appearance of blue, etc., and the knowledge that appears there are subjects. It is difficult to establish the experiencer and the experienced, i.e., the feeler and the felt, because they have different meanings. If so, does it contradict appearing as different? The consciousness that appears as blue, etc., is a subject. Even though the aspects of the knowable, the apprehended, and the knower, the apprehender, have no other meaning, it is not contradictory to appear as different in a mistaken appearance because the habit of dualistic appearance makes it appear that way. For example, the apprehended and the apprehender of the knowledge that appears as hair, etc., even though they are not different, appear as different. Fifth, if so, what is the characteristic of establishing that consciousness as the apprehended and the apprehender on that object? The consciousness of object appearance is a subject. When establishing the apprehended and the apprehender in relation to mistaken appearance, how does one establish the apprehended and the apprehender on that object? The characteristic of the apprehended and the apprehender is not a matter of dispute, but rather it is not to be examined. At the time of establishing according to appearance, when the characteristics of distinguishing the apprehended and the apprehender are separated, the aspect-consciousness tainted by the habit of appearing as the apprehended and the apprehender is seen by mistake as this is the apprehended, this is the apprehender. Thus, the establishment of the apprehended and the apprehender is done on the appearance of the mistaken consciousness, not on the object itself. Second, the knowledge of object appearance arising from firmly established habits is a subject. If analyzed, it is considered to be the result or function of self-cognition because any cognition, if analyzed, has no cognition other than itself because the object of knowledge, the external object, has already been refuted. Therefore, here the Mind-Only school analyzes the two types of sense consciousness: the sense consciousness arising from firmly established habits and the sense consciousness arising from non-firmly established habits. When analyzed, they are the same in self-cognition, so they are the same in that self-cognition is manifest in their own nature.

In general, there is a difference in whether or not to accept self-cognizance as manifest. The former is valid cognition, while the latter is not. The way the former is considered valid is that, in conventional terms, it is recognized in that it does not deceive the object of pursuit for those who seek meaning. At that time, sense direct perception and self-cognizance direct perception are considered to have a common basis. According to the 'Examination of the Object,' the three conditions for sense direct perception are present in the Mind-Only system itself, so sense direct perception is undeniably established. Since it is a direct perception without any other knowable object, self-cognizance direct perception is also undeniably established. In this way, even if the Mind-Only school accepts the direct perception of sense and mind, the way to explain the scripture 'Four types of direct perception are only in the Sutra school, three in the Vaibhashika, and two in the Mind-Only school' as it is, seems to be used only by me alone these days. Second, there are three ways to establish self-cognizance as the result by preventing the appearance from being an external object: There is no proof that the external object actually appears. There is harm in the appearance being an external object. Therefore, self-cognizance is established through these two methods. The first is: If the Vaibhashika says, 'The external object that creates the image does not exist in secret, but if consciousness actually experiences the external object that appears in its own time, what fault do you have that you explain self-cognizance as the result?' We have no fault, but this is not the reality. Because what meaning does this very sentence 'Consciousness actually experiences the external object' express? Because there is no proof. The second is: If it is said that the absence of proof is not established, because the mind is in the form of that object. The mind does have the characteristic of following the form of the object in its own time, but is that form, as a subject, your real external object, or another form arising from habit? This is worth investigating, but it is not a real external object, because it will be harmed by the reasoning explained below. How does it harm? Appearing blue, as a subject, what is seen is the mind, not an independent external object, because when the characteristic of what is seen, that is, the grasping of blue, does not exist, you do not grasp, and when the grasping of blue exists, you grasp, that is, simultaneously with the grasping of blue.
