The meaning of elimination is absent, because the nature of direct perception eliminates conceptualization. Some commentators on the sutras say this. The second (refutation) is divided into two: refutation by intellect, scripture, and reasoning; and refutation by conceptualization, intrinsic power, and reasoning. The first (refutation by intellect) is divided into two: refutation by the scripture of debaters, and refutation by similarity to the basis of others. The first (refutation by the scripture of debaters) is: when the teacher examines the objective condition of direct perception in debate, if those who speak of entities say that atoms are the objective condition of sense direct perception, then does sense consciousness say it is an objective condition because it apprehends it in this way, or is it said to be an objective condition because it is the cause of sense direct perception? The former is not established, but according to the latter, it should also be the object of the senses of names, etc., because those things that exist in a different way in reality are the cause of the consciousness that appears as two moons, etc., and appears as blue, etc. Therefore, this treatise, which says that the senses of blue and two moons, etc., are also causes, contradicts those who believe that the knowledge of the clear appearance of two moons is conceptual, because those are mental conceptualizations, so it is not appropriate to say that they are the cause of that sense. If you say that the meaning of that treatise is that the senses are said to be the cause of holding two moons, etc., through transmission, but not as a direct cause, so there is no contradiction, then when examining and refuting that the senses are the objective condition of the object of knowledge, the sense faculty, the subject, should be the objective condition of consciousness, because it is the indirect cause of consciousness. How will this be established in the context? It should not be established, because it is in the context of refuting the idea that it is the objective condition of sense consciousness because it is the cause of sense consciousness. The second (refutation by similarity to the basis of others) is: Furthermore, relying on the senses, what is the nature of establishing sense consciousness? If you say that any mind that directly follows the presence or absence of the senses, then the clear appearance of two moons should also be sense consciousness, because the direct following of the presence or absence of the senses is the same. If you say that merely following the senses is not the nature, but that the senses become clear or unclear, and therefore the knowledge also becomes clear or unclear, and that which has this condition is sense consciousness, then why is this clear appearance of two moons not sense consciousness?

It is unreasonable to think of preventing, because it is from the root that it has changes from the changes of the senses. The second part is divided into two points: refuting excessive inferences with reasons, and refuting with manifest signs. The first point is: the clear perception of the appearance of two moons is also a subject, even if there are changes in the senses, such as squeezing the eyes with fingers, etc., it will change, but the confusion of the senses, even if reversed, will not change, that is, it does not follow the presence or absence of the independent cause, the confusion of the senses, because it is mental discrimination. It is like a rope being mistaken for a snake, a mirage being mistaken for water, etc. Also, it is also a subject, just as saying "This is a snake" gives rise to the discrimination of grasping a snake, in the continuums of others, with words stating their own objects, at certain times, the establishment will arise, and it will depend on recalling previously seen symbols, and it will not clearly manifest its own appearing object, because it is mental discrimination. The second point is: if a special explanation is given to dispel the doubt about whether the clear perception of the appearance of two moons is a non-discriminating appearance, then there is no need to dispel it, because whether asleep or awake, whatever consciousness has clarity is a subject, it is non-discriminating, because it is empty of grasping sound and meaning. Whether asleep or awake, if the clarity is not like that, then this consciousness is a subject, it is discriminating, because it is a consciousness that truly grasps sound and meaning. The third point is: because there are non-discriminating illusions, such as the appearance of two moons, etc., therefore the appearance of two moons is a subject, even if you are non-discriminating, but in the phrase "the direct perception separated from discrimination," the direct perception becomes a valid cognition, which is prevented by the phrase "having cataracts," because even if you are non-discriminating, it is a deceptive consciousness. Therefore, it is necessary to separately explain the two categories of apparent direct perception of discrimination and non-discrimination, because it is not only for merely understanding that these two categories are different, but also for understanding that even non-discrimination is an illusion, it is not direct perception. Third, regarding the explanation of the valid cognition and result that establish the knowable, it is divided into two parts: the general aspect and the meaning of the text. First, in the "Treatise on Valid Cognition," "Direct perception and subsequent
