Like the conceptual thought that grasps. Inference is the mind that grasps the sign. That which arises from inference is valid inference. Memory is remembering the past. Desire is like the mind that desires future things. These are explained in this text by summarizing them into three: first, imputing onto other objects; second, having a basis of convention; and the latter four, conceptual thoughts that have hidden meanings. Here, there are three: summarizing into four apparent perceptions, explaining the necessity of the three conceptual thoughts, and the meaning of separating the corrupted. First, the seven apparent perceptions that are generally spoken of, in terms of necessity, are gathered into four types: conventional consciousness, having a basis of convention; deluded consciousness, imputing onto other objects; the four inferences, etc., having hidden meanings, i.e., the three types of conceptual consciousness; and one non-conceptual consciousness that arises from corrupted bases, entities, and conditions. Second, there are two: briefly indicating the necessity and extensively explaining the nature. First, the fact that conventional consciousness and deluded consciousness are spoken of as apparent perceptions is necessary because it is for the purpose of establishing that these two are not consciousnesses born from the senses. It is necessary to establish that these two are not sense consciousnesses because the followers of the "consciousness-only" school are seen to be mistaken about sense consciousness. Some explain it as not being perception born from the senses, which is a bit crude, because even the "consciousness-only" school does not consider deluded consciousness to be perception, because in the Compendium, it is said that the "consciousness-only" school says that perception is the nature of grasping that is born from the meeting of the senses and objects, and is without delusion. The fact that the four inferences, etc., are spoken of as distinctions of apparent perception even though it is established that they are not sense consciousnesses is necessary because it is for the purpose of explaining the first two conceptual thoughts as similar examples of not being born from the senses. Second, there are three: extensively explaining seeing delusion, extensively explaining the establishment of inference, etc., and extensively explaining the way of establishing the former. First, what is the cause of mistaking these two for sense consciousnesses? Like the general apprehension of a pot that has a basis of convention.

The conceptual thoughts that confuse with other things, such as mistaking a mirage for water, sometimes become the cause of mistaking for eye consciousness. Because through the direct perception of the eye faculty, approaching and simultaneously acting with things like bottles and mirages, there is doubt whether they are cognizing their real objects. The second point is that, for example, the four conceptual thoughts such as the memory of hidden things do not directly grasp the object of direct perception, because grasping their own objects requires relying on the memory of the words of their own objects. The third point is that, for example, the conventional consciousness that grasps universals such as the general characteristics of things like bottles, and the two kinds of consciousness that are confused, such as mistaking mirages for water, will also completely lose the ability to grasp the object of direct perception, because without the memory of the words of things like bottles that have been experienced before, they themselves will not exist. The third part is divided into three points: stating the self-view that it is root consciousness; refuting the other's view that it is consciousness; summarizing and explaining the meaning of refutation and establishment. The first point is that when explaining similar direct perception, the teacher used the phrase "connected with confused non-conceptual consciousness" to distinguish the fourth type of similar direct perception, namely non-conceptual confused consciousness, from the category of conceptual thoughts, which is necessary. Because it is usually said that "non-conceptual is direct perception," but if it is confused, it is similar direct perception, which is pointed out by special distinction. Because the phrase "connected with confusion" refers to all consciousnesses that are produced by internal and external factors that damage the root as the co-existent cause, are called similar direct perception. Mentioning only cataracts to explain the factors that cause damage to the root is to indicate all other factors that cause damage to the root, because it is only to explain the cause of the confusion of root consciousness. The second part is divided into two points: stating the opponent's view; refuting the opponent's view. The first point is that the consciousness of people with cataracts and those who cling to the second month, etc., is not the confusion of root consciousness, but the conceptual thought of consciousness, so it needs to be specially excluded.
