If so, sense consciousness, having the nature of dharma. What ability do happiness and so on have to be the object of apprehension for you? None, right? Because happiness and so on do not want to produce you by becoming the object of apprehension. The fourth question is: If there is absolutely no object, and happiness and so on are experienced by the sense consciousnesses such as the eye, then, eye consciousness, having the nature of dharma. It will never apprehend the distinctions of the means of establishing happiness and so on, such as beautiful women and so on, because it only apprehends happiness and so on as the object of apprehension. This is pervasive, because the inner parts, happiness and so on, exist in the meaning of being able to produce sense consciousness, and if sense consciousness apprehends it, then sense consciousness will not see the external object, because this is pervasive. The fifth question is: If sense consciousness only apprehends external objects such as form, then, that person with sense consciousness, having the nature of dharma. The consciousness in your continuum will not experience happiness and so on arising from that object, because there is only one consciousness in your continuum, and it only apprehends the object. The second case is: If from the existence of the object form and so on and happiness and so on, both the sense consciousness that apprehends form and so on and the mind that experiences happiness and so on arise simultaneously, then, when two things, wanted and unwanted, exist simultaneously, in the continuum of one person, happiness and suffering will be known or experienced simultaneously, because wanted and unwanted things exist simultaneously. If happiness and suffering do not arise merely because there are two objects, however, the immediate cause of happiness and suffering, which is the nature of anything, the mind consciousness also exists with the object and aggregate, therefore suffering and so on and happiness arise, therefore happiness and suffering do not arise simultaneously, because there is only one consciousness, and that one consciousness is not considered to be the immediate cause of simultaneously producing the two contradictory things of happiness and suffering. Then, happiness and suffering, having the nature of dharma. By what does the mind consciousness know you, is it your immediate cause? No, because you are an unconscious object. If mind consciousness is not the immediate cause of happiness and so on, but it will become the dominant condition, one dominant condition

If it is said that since one self does not simultaneously produce contradictory results, happiness and suffering do not arise simultaneously. Then, that self-cause is the subject, it is not established that you alone cannot simultaneously produce contradictory self-results, because the ability to simultaneously produce contradictory self-results is also seen in you alone. For example, the appearing sunlight, for the eye faculty of the owl that walks at night, and for the eye faculties of other humans, etc., is both a contrary condition and a favorable condition for seeing forms, respectively, just like that. Third, showing that it is the very thing that cognizes other objects. Happiness, etc., since it is not appropriate to be experienced by other consciousnesses that are simultaneous or not simultaneous with oneself, it is established as self-cognition. Happiness, etc., are the subject, and they also cognize other objects, because what appears is the aspect of the object transferred to oneself, therefore it is so. Therefore, these happinesses, etc., which are the cognizers of aspects that have become one's own nature, are the subject, they are merely born from external objects as possessing their aspects, but they do not actually experience external objects, because what is actually experienced is the aspect of the object, so in the world it is merely the establishment of the name of experiencing the object. Therefore, happiness, etc., are the subject, it is said that experiencing the aspect of the object is established as experiencing the object, because the nature of the object, that is, the aspect given from itself, is the self of those consciousnesses, so it is experience, therefore it is so. Happiness, etc., are the subject, the name of your object of the object is permissible, because the aspect given by the object appears to it. Second, refuting that happiness, etc., are external material objects, divided into two: stating the view, refuting it. The first is: Some called Samkhyas say that happiness, etc., in external objects, abide in the nature of the five tanmatras such as form, and are unconscious matter, and are to be apprehended by other consciousnesses, not self-cognition. The second is divided into three: refuting that happiness, etc., are apprehended by others, refuting that happiness, etc., are external, refuting that happiness, etc., are unconscious. The first is: For the Samkhya school, the root consciousness that holds the five tanmatras is the subject, simultaneously for form, etc., and
