Furthermore, even if the basis of sense consciousness and conceptual mind is allowed to arise from different sources, the generality of whiteness itself, the dharma, is clear to sense consciousness but unclear to conceptualization, appearing in various natures. How could that be? It is unreasonable, because for both of them, it is the very object of a single characteristic that appears directly. Third, if it is said that the object of direct perception and verbal conceptualization is the same, because only what is seen by direct perception is subject to the verbal conceptualization of "this is," then, cows and so on, the dharma, your expressive sound and the cognition of recognition are contrary to taking what is seen by direct perception as the object, because without actually stating what is seen by direct perception and without cognition, one clings to the meaning of the cow's past and future as one, thereby your expressive sound and conceptualization are applied. Moreover, this demonstration that the objects of direct perception and verbal conceptualization are different, the dharma, also has other necessities, because for all that is seen by sense consciousness, such as cows, whatever is the sound that expresses genus and so on, and the conceptualization that grasps it, from the sign of following, inferring that there are other meanings such as genus, that is also refuted. Then, if there is no single generality in many appearances, how does the recognition of a single generality arise? The appearances of cows seen by direct perception, the dharma, even if there is no single generality in meaning and they are mutually different, it is reasonable for the wisdom of recognizing a single generality to arise, because the conceptualization called recognizing a single generality is established by a nature that is contrary to the fact that cows cannot accomplish the purpose, as it has already been said in the chapter on self-interest. Second, along with refuting the dispute of the three conditions, explaining the direct perception of mind, in the Sutra on Valid Cognition it says, "Mind also with meaning," and in its commentary it says, "Mind also focuses on becoming the aspect of form and so on, and because it proceeds with the aspect of experiencing, it is without conceptualization," the explanation of this meaning has two parts: the general way of establishing it and the meaning of the text. First, the Sugata said, "Monks, there are two kinds of consciousness of form, namely, relying on the eye and relying on the mind," thus, the meaning of the direct perception relying on the mind was proclaimed, and Dignāga established non-conceptualization with "Mind also with meaning."

This is established by actually showing the function and by emphasizing the commitment. Pandit Dignāga (dpal ldan grags pa), considering that the proof of being free from concepts had already been shown in the section on sense direct perception (dbang mngon), did not discuss it here, but the non-Buddhist with unpierced ears presented two arguments because Dignāga (phyogs glang) admitted mental direct perception. As an answer to these arguments, some people prevented the idea that mental direct perception holds the object that has already been grasped by sense direct perception, and there is no fault of a blind person seeing forms even if, according to our own system, something other than the object grasped by sense direct perception is grasped. The argument that it would grasp an undetermined self-object is refuted, and from there it is inferred that the grasper and the grasped of mental direct perception occur simultaneously, and from there it is inferred that if they do not occur simultaneously, grasping and being grasped are contradictory, these six are in order, such as "if grasping previous experience" etc., and "because it is only momentary" etc., and "therefore, the senses" etc., and "self-meaning following" etc., and "that and the time of action" etc., and "because the times are different" etc. The second part has four: recording the arguments for examining the two extremes. Refuting the other's answer that the former is reasonable. Saying to oneself that the latter is reasonable. Here, refuting the indirect arguments. The first point is: the non-Buddhist with unpierced ears says, does this mental direct perception grasp the object that was previously grasped by sense direct perception, or does it grasp the object that was not grasped? If it is the former, then mental direct perception is the subject, it is not a valid cognition, because it is grasping what has already been experienced by a valid cognition. If it is the latter, then blind and deaf people etc. will also become the subject, they will see and hear forms and sounds etc., because even if sense direct perception does not see, the mind grasps the self-characteristics of forms etc., because there is mind. If so, the second point is divided into two: because it has passed, previous experience cannot be seen. If it is seen, then it will be harmed by three faults. The first point is: if mental direct perception grasps the object that was previously grasped by sense consciousness, then is the grasped object momentary or non-momentary? If it is the former, then mental direct perception is the subject, it does not have the grasped object of its immediate cause, because the grasped object of the sense direct perception that is its immediate cause has passed at the time of the sense direct perception that is its immediate cause, because it is its own.
