There are three instances of establishing wisdom as the result, establishing self-awareness as the result, and establishing the characteristic of self-awareness as the result. In the system of the Realists, there are two instances in which conceptual awareness and the characteristic of self-awareness are established as the result. The differences between these should be understood in detail from oral instructions, and a brief explanation has already been given in the general meaning. The third has two parts: refuting the apprehended and the apprehender based on the aggregates, and refuting the function based on the characteristic. The first is: If it is said that the apprehended and the apprehender are established as distinct entities in relation to the five aggregates, because the form aggregate is the apprehended and feelings etc. are the apprehender, then the establishment of those five aggregates as distinct apprehended and apprehender is also a deception, that is, a mistake, because the appearance of a single consciousness as distinct apprehended and apprehender is itself a deception, that is, a mistake. This is pervasive, because the aspect of the five aggregates existing as distinct apprehended and apprehender is established based on the appearance of consciousness as distinct apprehended and apprehender. The second is: Not only are the apprehended and the apprehender not truly existent, but the Buddha also taught that all phenomena that are to be signified by other characteristics are without inherent existence, because the characteristic that establishes those phenomena is empty of inherent existence. The reason is established: The characteristic of the aggregates etc. is the subject. It is not truly existent, because it does not exist apart from the appearance of the apprehended and the apprehender. The function of that characteristic is also without inherent existence, like this, in name, the aggregates etc., and all the differences of the elements and sense bases, the meaning of being piled up in sequence, the meaning of being a source, and the opening of the door for the arising of mind and mental factors, are all the subject. Although the function has no other meaning, it has the distinction of functioning in name, because in name it is able to signify those things that it signifies. That function is also the subject. It is an imputation, and it is not truly existent, because your basis, the characteristic, is not ultimately existent. Therefore, the aggregates etc. are the subject. They are devoid of characteristic in the ultimate sense, because there is no function of characteristic in the ultimate sense. The fourth has three parts: abandoning contradiction with dualistic appearance, abandoning the knowledge of thatness by all, abandoning contradiction with the words of the Sugata.

It is so. First, if all phenomena encompassed by the apprehended and the apprehender are empty of inherent existence, then it contradicts direct perception, this is the question. Ordinary beings whose minds are deluded by non-afflictive ignorance are the subject. Since the two, apprehender and apprehended, appear to you, it is not necessary for the two, apprehender and apprehended, to be truly existent, because for you, depending on the individual causes of how the activating habit is determined, the consciousness that appears as forms, etc., arises as having an aspect that is not suchness, just as strands of hair, etc., appear to those with cataracts. Second, if all phenomena are empty of the two, apprehender and apprehended, in reality, then ordinary beings should realize suchness, which is emptiness of two, from the beginning, this is the question. All ordinary beings who are not seers are the subject. Suchness, which is emptiness of two, is not realized ultimately, because the habit has not been eradicated from its root since the two, apprehender and apprehended, appear. The proof is established, if there were no delusion of the appearance of the two, apprehender and apprehended, then those individuals who are not seers would not exist. Third, if all phenomena encompassed by the apprehender and the apprehended are empty of inherent existence, then it contradicts the arrangement of aggregates, elements, and sense bases spoken by the Bhagavan, this is the question. The Bhagavan, although seeing the meaning of reality, acted as if not seeing, proceeding with the manner of looking of an elephant, engaging in the arrangement of aggregates, elements, and sense bases of external objects, is the subject. It is not an arrangement made in terms of reality, because it is a conventional arrangement in which the mind, with the need to prevent worldly beings from grasping at things as real, etc., has temporarily set aside the meaning of reality. Second, although there are, there is no harm because there is a difference in the sign, this has three: various consciousnesses have no difference, various meanings have difference, and although there is no single substance, it is reasonable in the object. First, in the eye consciousness that perceives patterns, the aspect of the coarse pattern that appears is the subject. It is not a single substance, because it appears in various ways to the mind. Such an answer is established based on the tenets of the Sutra school, namely: because our minds are the nature of various aspects, such is the reason.
