Because it holds only the later moment of meaning that you have not made an object with nominal distinction, it is pervasive. If there is nominal distinction, then how can the previous meaning that has been established with nominal terms, that is, the meaning to be realized, be established? And root consciousness holds the later meaning without the distinction of meaning established by nominal terms. If the later meaning directly produces root consciousness, then what is the use of nominal distinction for root consciousness? Because it must be useless. If you say that the reason is not established, because root consciousness only holds the general wandering part of the object of nominal terms. Then, the subject, root consciousness, is not established, it should not rely on the second moment of the difference of meaning as the objective condition, because it holds the general wandering part that does not rely on meaning. Third, taking eye consciousness as an example, the subject, root consciousness, represented by eye and form, arises depending on its own three conditions, not from nominal distinction, because it changes according to the presence or absence of its own causes and conditions, not according to the presence or absence of nominal distinction. Second, there are two ways to refute the debate between the signifier and the signified: refuting the debate over the name of the signified, and refuting the debate over the nature of the meaning. First, the sutra says: Because it is the uncommon cause, its name is made by the root. The explanation of the meaning is divided into two: debate and answer. First, if it is said that when the direct perception of the root arises, the root is like having the ability, and the object also has the same ability, then why is the consciousness that arises from relying on both the object and the root not represented by the object and called the direct perception of the object, but represented by the root and called the direct perception of the root? Second, the reason why the name of the direct perception of the root is to be established for the unerring consciousness arising from both the object and the root is also because that name can understand that meaning in an uncommon way, because it has that dharma. Because in general, enlightened beings do not establish names unnecessarily, but relying on that name, that meaning can be uncommon.

Because it is seen that it is necessary to make (something) understood as not being (this thing), that is why that term is definitely applied as the name of that thing. Therefore, concerning the term "sense perception," it should be applied to the non-erroneous consciousness that arises from both object and sense faculty, because it is a term that can make one understand non-commonly the non-erroneous consciousness that arises from both object and sense faculty, which is a nature reason, a correct probans, because it has a relationship of identity with its own to-be-proven dharma. Concerning the non-erroneous consciousness that arises from both object and sense faculty, it would be contradictory to apply the term "object-consciousness," because the pervasion of what is appropriate to apply the term "object-consciousness" is contradictory, since it can be understood non-commonly from that term itself. The second (part) has two: refuting arguments that are harmful by scripture, and refuting arguments that are harmful by reasoning. The first (part): In the sutra, it says, "Because it is produced by many meanings, it is the object of the general characteristic of its own meaning." There are two explanations of the meaning of what is said: argument and answer. The first (part): You, Sautrāntika, if you assert that sense consciousness is free from conceptualization, then it contradicts what your own tenet says, that the five aggregates of consciousness are those that focus on accumulation, in this way, the mind of the senses is inevitably connected with conceptual thought, because it is the mind that holds the general category. The reason is accepted, because the accumulation that is said to focus on accumulation is a collection of many dharmas, the collection is a general category, and the sense consciousness focuses on it. Moreover, Master Vasubandhu said in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa, "These are the self-characteristics of their own realms, with their own self-characteristics as objects, but not with the self-characteristics of substances." This is also contradictory, because sense consciousness is not with its own self-characteristic as an object, but only with the general characteristic as an object. If you say that. The second (part) has three: refuting contradiction with one's own tenet, refuting contradiction with the treatises of the wise, and refuting arguments about the meaning of scripture. The first (part): This word "accumulation" does not refer to the general category of many collections, because the subtle particles cannot produce sense consciousness.
