And, the meaning of the treatise. The first part is divided into two points: refuting the unreasonable aspects and explaining the way the treatise elucidates. The first point is: from "The previous ones, considered perception to be free from conceptualization" to "Relying on this, eye consciousness arises," it elucidates the general definition of perception. If it is thought that from "Assuming perception gives rise to knowledge" onwards, the four types of perception are elucidated separately, that is unreasonable. Because, in general, "That which is combined with name and genus, etc., is perception free from conceptualization," this elucidates the general definition of perception, then this contradicts what those treatises elucidate. If it is not elucidated, then "consciousness is also with meaning" explains that the previous proof of being free from conceptualization comes from meaning, not only that, but also consciousness perception comes from meaning, therefore it is free from conceptualization, which has been determined in both the Commentary on Valid Cognition and the Treatise on Valid Cognition, because not all perceptions arise from the apprehended meaning. Even if it is, perception arises from the apprehended meaning, and also consciousness perception arises from the apprehended meaning, there is no connection between the two. Those later ones think that the first verse here is the general definition of perception, and from "From all, the mind is gathered" onwards, apply it to sense perception, and claim that this is precisely the view of the Treatise on Valid Cognition. Those people seem not to have distinguished the difference that in the Treatise on Valid Cognition, the three chapters of perception, self-benefit, and other-benefit first have treatises elucidating their general definitions, but here there is no such difference. If it is thought that the first verse here is the meaning of perception in the Treatise on Valid Cognition as being free from conceptualization, without error, etc., then it is clear that the later treatises have not been looked at. Because, in that, "After having proven the conceptualization combined with genus, etc., then to argue that the root consciousness is free from conceptualization, this is perception, because of what? From all, the mind is gathered," etc., these words have not been seen. Some people apply these to sense perception, dividing it into two: arguing that sense consciousness is free from conceptualization and refuting the idea that it is conceptual. The first is further divided into three: perception argument, reasoning argument, and refuting other arguments. The latter is further divided into three: refuting that meaning combination is conceptual, refuting that sound combination is conceptual, and if it is conceptual, then there are too many faults, this is also the meaning of the treatise.

It is not so, because there is no difference between proving to be free from conceptualization and negating it as conceptualization, and when the former is negating name-combining conceptualization and the latter is negating meaning-combining conceptualization, the point of the meaning is not grasped, and also establishing by direct perception is, "All conceptual thoughts rely on names." Because it is to be established as being free from name-combining conceptualization, and "Having the cause of remembering words." Separating it separately from negating meaning-combining conceptualization is also contrary to what is said in the previous commentary on it in Pramāṇavārttika, "For whatever there is a thought of being different, there is also grasping for that." Secondly, Dignāga said, "Name and kind, etc., are combined, direct perception is free from conceptualization." Thus, for sense direct perception, the promise of being free from conceptualization is explicitly stated, and the proof is implicitly shown. "Mind also with meaning" thus, for mental direct perception, the proof is explicitly stated, and the promise is implicitly shown. Dharmakīrti combined the two, and at the time of sense direct perception, he proved it to be free from conceptualization because it arises from the object, and by examining the conceptualization to be separated, he proved it to be free from name-combining conceptualization, and he made three proofs of being free from meaning-combining conceptualization. In Pramāṇaviniścaya, he derived from showing the definition of direct perception, and grasped the meaning reversal of the conceptualization to be separated. From that, he derived and established the proof of arising from the object, which is said in the sutras, to prove that sense direct perception is separate from it. Then, the proof of being free from meaning-combining conceptualization and being free from name-combining conceptualization were successively spoken. Here, the order of those three is reversed and spoken, of which the first two are the order of the sutras, and the need to speak of arising from the object at the end is that, in order to avoid disputes over the term of the signified sense consciousness, it is necessary to say that it arises from both the sense and the object in the context of the subject matter, and it is for the sake of knowing one part of it, arising from the object. Previously, in Tibet, there was no other explanation like this. Secondly, there are four: Explaining the direct perception of the senses, including the avoidance of disputes about being free from conceptualization. Explaining the direct perception of the mind, including the avoidance of disputes about the three conditions. Explaining self-awareness direct perception by proving that what is experienced is consciousness. Explaining yoga direct perception by proving true clarity. The first has two, namely: Definition, freedom from conceptualization, reason.
