Because doing so is not permissible. Because, being devoid of the ability to function is the characteristic of non-existence. Second, establishing the characteristic of self-nature of things is: whatever is a thing, it is considered its own characteristic, because it is contrary to what was said about the expression of the thing of sound, etc. Here, saying that self-nature is established as a thing is merely connecting with words without understanding the previous ability. Third, showing the difference of the general characteristic is divided into two: things and refuting disputes. First, if the general characteristic is not a thing, then will there be no difference? The general characteristic is also a subject, with three types, such as: the general characteristic of living beings depends on things, the general characteristic of non-living beings depends on non-things, and the general characteristic of knowable things depends on both. This and the three types of general characteristics mentioned in the first chapter are because the establishment of the general characteristic is from the perspective of clinging to that thing in the form of discrimination, so the name of the general characteristic that depends on both is mentioned. As for other exclusions, there are two types: the other exclusion of things and the other exclusion of non-things, because the other exclusion is established from the perspective of cutting off different categories, so it is considered that the different categories to be cut off are two types: things and non-things. The second is divided into two: dispute and answer. First, if the discrimination that clings to the general characteristic that depends on things is a subject, then it will be known from the appearance of the self-nature of things, because it is the knowledge that is related to the following of the self-nature of things. Second, that subject is not known from the appearance of self-nature, because the object that you manifest is a thing, and what is expressed is only what has already been answered in the occasions such as "because", and for the discrimination that clings to past and future things, seeing different forms from the association with the self-nature of things, so the reason is not established either. If the general characteristic of things is the Dharma-nature of things, then it will be lost, because the discrimination that clings to things is not directly related to things. The general characteristic of things is a subject, you do not have the fault of losing being the Dharma of things, because the direct perception that clings to things such as form is the preceding discrimination.

Because wisdom is the knowledge that you hold. Second, to summarize the object of entry—the object of measurement—into one self-characteristic: Then, is the object of measurement necessarily divided into self-characteristic and general characteristic in terms of essence? Answer: It is divided into self-characteristic and general characteristic from the perspective of the way of entry, but only the characteristic of self-characteristic is universally referred to as the object of entry and exit of valid cognition. Because judging the entry and exit of the definitive knowledge that it leads to, its function is accomplished only by the self-characteristic. Furthermore, when the self-characteristic of external objects is measured by direct perception, it is the object to be grasped; when measured by inference, it is the object to be apprehended; and when both cause a person to enter, it is established as the object of entry because it is not deceptive. When measured by inference, the appearance of the self-characteristic, which is essentially mistaken in external objects, is established as the general characteristic. Therefore, if you understand the key to the conceptualization of dividing the same self-characteristic into self-characteristic and general characteristic from the perspective of the way of entry, then there is no need for other question-and-answer sessions here. Third, to eliminate the contradiction with the two views stated about this, there are three points: dividing into two from the perspective of the way of understanding; second, explaining that the second way of understanding is mistaken; thereby eliminating non-valid cognition. The first point is: If only the self-characteristic is the object of measurement, then it contradicts Dignāga's statement that "two characteristics are the object of measurement." Answer: Dignāga, as for you, it is not that you consider the object of measurement to be two kinds of self-characteristic and general characteristic in terms of essence, because the self-characteristic is understood by direct perception with its own essence, and by inference with the essence of other general characteristics, therefore, he considers the object of measurement to be two from the perspective of the way of entry. The second point is: The second way of understanding, namely inference, is considered to be mistaken, because it does not apprehend the meaning of the self-characteristic as it is, but apprehends the appearance of the self-characteristic as real. The third point is divided into two points: stating the opponent's view, and explaining the refutation. The first point is: If, for inference, one apprehends the essence of the appearance of things different from the self-characteristic as the self-characteristic, then inference is not a method of obtaining the self-characteristic, because it apprehends the appearance that is not the self-characteristic as the self-characteristic, rather than truly appearing the self-characteristic. Or, inference is not valid cognition, because it is mistaken. Both of these statements can lead to their respective svatantras.
