And abandon all sources of heat such as the sun and fire. Do not rely on nutritious foods, and whip the body with water. (19) Avoid being exposed to wind and cold breezes, and avoid looking at and staying on mountaintops. For situations such as agitation and dullness, visualize a black lotus in the heart, with its mouth facing downwards, and then visualize a black bindu emerging from the urethra as if a black thread is broken. Visualize the seat dissolving into the golden ground, and reverse the clothes and behavior from before, keeping warm. In the awareness without agitation and dullness, at the appropriate time and place, or at the boundary of sunlight and shadow, visualize a bindu, or visualize a blue substance gradually shrinking, and maintain this way of visualization and focus. For all of these, first clearly generate the thought, "I will practice visualizing such a bindu, etc.," and strongly initiate the visualization. Afterwards, it is best if it is clear, but if it is not clear, just imagine in your mind that "there is such a thing," without observing and analyzing, but naturally and without distraction, remain in this state. To make the visualization clear, shorten the time and increase the number of sessions. Thirteen sessions in total. Furthermore, the method of holding the mind without relying on anything is: gradually visualize earth, water, fire, wind, and space dissolving into each other, eventually becoming a vast emptiness. Then, stare directly at the emptiness of the space in front and maintain focus. Do not generate any thoughts such as "exists," "does not exist," "is," "is not," but relax, loosen, and let go, maintaining a vigilant awareness without distraction. Do not allow the mind to wander even for a moment, like threading a needle. Remain unmoving, like an ocean without waves. Without effort, like an eagle soaring through the sky. Without hope and fear, like a lion dwelling on a snowy mountain. By abiding in this way, there will be no distraction and no conceptual thoughts will arise. As soon as there is distraction, a conceptual thought will suddenly arise. As soon as it arises, immediately recognize it. For non-virtuous thoughts such as attachment, anger, and ignorance (20), as well as virtuous thoughts such as generosity, or uncertain thoughts, whatever kind of conceptual thought arises, do not engage in any action of negation, affirmation, abandonment, acceptance, liking, or disliking, but simply recognize it and remain without distraction, observing with the eye of wisdom. Make these thoughts the object of holding the mind, avoiding the faults of being too tight or too loose, without falling into any extreme, but remaining in a balanced state. Fourteen sessions in total. If even this does not subdue the mind, then rely on the breath to hold the mind, divided into vase breathing and the method of relying on numbers. First is vase breathing:

Hold the nine breaths tightly at the end. Simultaneously with swallowing saliva, press down below the navel and hold as much as possible. When releasing, along with exhaling, temporarily leave the lower air in place. After becoming well-versed in this, slightly raise the lower air upwards. Learn vase breathing. Then also inhale a little. Focus the mind on the empty space inside, four fingers' width below the navel. Occasionally look at the space between the eyebrows and relax. Do not hold when too full or hungry. Like at dawn, hold as much as possible. Similarly, if the number of people is small, count the numbers, that is, count the three of air entering, staying, and exiting as one, initially about twenty-one or so, or eventually count with the mind to a hundred, a thousand, and so on. Do not be distracted to anywhere other than the passage of the nostrils. Be sure to grasp one of the categories of objects that remain. Because the types of people may be sudden, transcendent, and gradual, it is possible for them to have different situations of difficulty or ease, but do not be discouraged, persevere, it is impossible not to arise. With an experienced lama (21) guiding, the first abiding is like a waterfall on a steep mountain. The second is like a slowly flowing river. The third gradually appears like an unmoving great ocean. In the former ones, there seems to be a coarse conceptualization, but it was not felt before. Now because we are abiding together, we feel it, so do not be discouraged, persevere, and eventually no conceptualization will shake, and it will naturally appear. Like this, even if these three abidings have not arisen, generate diligence. By alternating between tightening, loosening, and reversing meditation, it will arise. When tightening, tighten the body, mind, consciousness, and all ways of looking, like walking on a single-plank bridge, do not have any reliance on this meditation, gently push it, and shorten the meditation sessions. Loosening is loosening the posture of body and speech, etc. Let the mind relax naturally. Without fabrication, without self, relax casually. Like a carefree child, relax and let go, just be mindful without distraction. Do not think about anything else. Make the meditation sessions a little longer. Reversing meditation is to recognize whatever conceptual thoughts arise and regard them as benefactors. Abandon all acceptance and rejection, hope and fear, and just recognize them. How much
