Everything naturally subsides into its own place, and the uncontrived and blissful state of peaceful abiding, where one dwells single-pointedly in the nature of virtue, is beyond words and can be experienced. By leaving it as it is and observing, one realizes that it is free from arising and ceasing, color, and form. Even the sound of "it is like that" is absent, and there is something that can be known to be free from arising and ceasing. Realizing this, know that it is the arising of insight from non-awareness. Twenty-second session. If you practice according to the second way of looking, then all the movements of conceptual thought are empty, free from arising and ceasing. If that is the case, it is just empty talk. If it disappears without a trace, then it is a slight arising. If there is no thought of "I am not grasping," and in the absence of clarity and grasping, arising and liberation are simultaneous, then it is recognizing the nature of mind. Furthermore, there is no good or bad, or any difference at all, in thoughts, the objects of thought, place, time, or the mind at the time of movement, or previous thoughts, etc. Instead, one realizes nakedly clear awareness. Or, after withdrawing thoughts, or after thoughts have vanished, it is not that it becomes clear emptiness, but if one realizes that spontaneously arising thoughts are clear emptiness, then one recognizes the nature of mind. Now, the movement of thoughts, their abiding, and the nature of thoughts themselves are all nakedly clear emptiness. There is no difference between thoughts and non-thoughts, except that one grasps at them with mental fabrications without knowing their true nature. Previously, because one did not know the nature of thoughts, one wasted time in meditation and remained in ignorance. Now, if one recognizes the nature of mind, then thoughts themselves will merge into meditation and wisdom (28). Now, make the root of meditation the thoughts themselves. Previously, thoughts themselves obscured themselves, so one did not see them. Now, it is more excellent than meditating on non-thoughts to know how to meditate on thoughts. Therefore, recognize whatever thoughts arise, and if no thoughts arise, leave it in the state of non-arising, without contrivance. If they arise, leave them in the state of arising, without trying to gather them in, and without any thoughts of hope or fear. Make the nature of meditation the thoughts themselves, and thoughts do not go beyond the mind. The mind is self-liberated, its nature is clear emptiness, nakedly the Dharmakaya, free from liberator and liberated. Realizing this is the arising of insight into thoughts, and therefore one recognizes the union of clarity and emptiness, the Dharmakaya. In short,

Having recognized that, rest upon it, without artifice or distraction. Session twenty-three. Looking from the perspective of appearance, that realm is also clear and unobstructed, and the mind that observes it also becomes ungrasping. That realm is also like a child looking at a temple, without the sound of "it is there." Appearance is empty and vast, without a place to be found. Appearance and mind are not different, and the self-luminous radiance of mind appears uninterruptedly. Appearance is not separate from mind, nor is it formed in another place, but appears as clarity and emptiness. This is the arising of vipassanā in appearance, so it should be known as the dharmakāya of the union of appearance and emptiness. Session twenty-four. Looking at body and mind in this way, they are neither one nor different, but are the union of clarity and emptiness, like the moon in water. Because of not realizing that appearance is emptiness, the power of habitual tendencies increases, and the mind clings and grasps tightly, but in reality, neither body nor mind can perceive the existence of things such as (29), and they are both free from the basis of existence, resting in such an appearance. If you observe too obsessively, it will backfire. Appearance will become ungrasping and empty, and at that time, self and appearance will be empty and without a place to be found. This is the natural state of reality, or the characteristic of mind. Self, appearance, and all minds are mind. Mind is also just self-luminous radiance, and there is no other existence besides that, so body and mind are also inseparable, just a fabrication of mind. Session twenty-five. Looking at abiding and moving in this way, recognize from them that conceptual thought is meditation. Recognize that there is no difference between abiding and moving. The way of appearance is to appear in turn, abiding in the present without changing. When moving, it appears from the eyes. The actor is the one mind, and the nature of these two does not go beyond naked clarity and emptiness. This is not pulling back thoughts and seeing naked clarity and emptiness, but the very first spontaneously arising thought is recognized as naked clarity and emptiness. In this way, the reality of mind is recognized, and the space between abiding and moving is called "the falling of the staff," so the mind either abides in a non-conceptual clear state, or thoughts arise, or the nature of the thoughts themselves does not go beyond naked clarity and emptiness. Now, all realms and appearances are like water and waves, all are the magical manifestations of mind, and in reality nothing is truly established.
