The so-called "clear seeing higher vision" distinguishes the beginning of samsara and nirvana. Through the guru's introduction, the student recognizes it as if meeting someone they knew in the past. Recognizing it is called recognizing the nature of mind. It is not that the student is highly intelligent, but that the guru is skilled in the pith instructions. It has always been abiding in this way, but in the past, it was not recognized due to the obscuration of afflictions and conceptual thoughts. When conceptual thoughts cease, it is recognized through introduction. The nature of mind (page 43) is the ungraspable, clear, and limpid. Although the nature of mind has no inherent existence, it appears clearly. The characteristic of mind is the essence of empty-clear awareness, which is clear, bright, and continuous. This is its essence. Recognizing this naked awareness and abiding in it constantly without wavering brings inconceivable benefits. When higher vision arises and abides in this, it is meeting it. This is the real introduction. It is important to focus on this and practice it, and to abide in it continuously. Recognizing and practicing in this way has five points. Furthermore, the second view is to cut off the root, introducing from the state of non-thought, and introducing from the state of flow or conceptual thought, that is, introducing from the flowing state of conceptual thought flowing or transforming. First, in non-thought, abiding in a clear and limpid state, looking at that awareness that is free from sinking and agitation, not thinking that it has color, shape, etc., and not thinking that it arises or ceases, and not having the thought (page 44) of "this is it." If there is something that knows without arising or ceasing, then higher vision has arisen in non-thought. Second, if you say that all flowing conceptual thoughts are empty, free from arising and ceasing, that is just empty talk. If you abide silently without trace, free from grasping at arising, ceasing, abiding in the three times, shape, color, etc., then a little has arisen. If there is not even the thought of "there is no grasping," and in a state of non-concern and non-attachment, appearance and liberation occur simultaneously, then it is meeting it. Furthermore, regarding thoughts, the objects of thoughts, places, times, and the mind at the time of flow, past thoughts, past conceptual thoughts, etc., without making distinctions of good or bad, or differences, but nakedly recognizing clear awareness, or after the thought has been withdrawn, or after the thought has disappeared, not entering into a state of clear emptiness, but the thought that arises spontaneously itself appears as clear emptiness, or realizing this, then it is meeting it.

Therefore, now the thought transforms (45), and the three—abiding, and the essence of thought itself—are all nakedly in luminosity and emptiness. If one does not truly understand thought and non-thought, but merely fabricates and grasps with the mind, there is no difference whatsoever. Previously, because one did not understand the essence of thought, one did not enter meditation, and it was ignorance. Now, if one recognizes it, thought itself is meditation, and awareness is wisdom. Now, place the root of meditation on thought. Previously, thought itself obscured itself, so it was not seen. Surpassing the excellence of meditating on non-thought, now it is learning to meditate on thought, so recognize whatever thought arises. If thought does not arise, abide in the state of non-arising, there is no need to fabricate. If it arises, abide in the state of arising, there is no need to gather it in. Do not have any thoughts of hope and fear, place the essence of meditation on thought itself. Thought does not go beyond the mind. The mind is self-born, its essence is luminous (46) emptiness, naked, it is the Dharmakaya, free from the liberator and the object of liberation. Understanding in this way is the arising of vipashyana on thought, therefore recognizing the Dharmakaya as the union of luminosity and emptiness. In short, recognize whatever arises, and abide and cultivate on it without alteration or distraction. This is the second true recognition, merely recognizing is not enough, one must continuously cultivate, this is the sixth point. The third recognition is the inseparability of appearance and mind, recognizing from the perspective of appearance: When looking at any of the external five objects, etc., there is not even a trace of the thought that the object is over there, the object is unobstructed, open. The mind that observes it also dissolves without grasping. These two are neither one nor different, and there is no thought of non-existence. The two, body and mind, are also neither one nor different, inseparable, luminosity and emptiness, the union of appearance and emptiness, like the moon in water. Feelings such as hot and cold are also, because one does not understand that appearance is appearance-emptiness (47), the mind fabricates and grasps endlessly. Apart from that, in reality, neither body nor mind can feel, because they are free from the basis of imputation. For any appearance that arises, give it the way of looking and the mind. Then relax slightly and abide, at first one will clearly see the texture of the object, then one will slightly not want to look, feel nauseous, the eyes blur, this is returning.
