After a thought arises or is generated, look at that too. Observe what differences there are between the thought itself, the object of the thought, and previous thoughts or mind, etc., and from within, cut off doubts and be certain. If the essence of the thought appears clearly and nakedly, then see if there is any difference between the clear and naked appearance of seeing on top of what was previously abiding and the clear and naked appearance of seeing on top of the thought now. If it is not determined, then pull that thought back and place it in clarity, and instead of looking, look at the essence of that spontaneously arising thought, which is not defiled by any initial ordinary consciousness, so look well, etc. In short, in accordance with the way it appears and is understood. The two, master and student, should distinguish and cut off the root and foundation, and emphasize the introduction of the view and the way of looking (33), this is the second. Again, in order to introduce the inseparability of appearance and mind, look from the perspective of appearance, the way of looking, the posture of the body is the same as before, the object is a definite pillar, vase, or statue, or like Mount Meru, or any suitable shape in space, focus the eyes and attention on one point and stare at it. Release the consciousness on top of that and rest for a while. Similarly, observe the object of the ear, whether the sound is pleasant or unpleasant, large or small, different, existent or non-existent, what is said by oneself and others, etc., observe the essence of the sound. Similarly, in the object of the nose, observe whether the smell that appears is good or bad, on the tongue, whether the taste is delicious or not, on the body, whether the tactile sensation is comfortable or painful, hot or cold, sickness, pain, stinging, etc., whatever arises, observe it. At that time, is the appearance ceasing, or is the appearance separate from oneself, or does the appearance return to the mind, or does the mind think that "this is appearance" through the appearance, or are appearance and mind inseparable, (34) is there a clear existence in the emptiness of appearance without an object? Like this, alternate the observer, the thought of observing, and any one of the five objects. See if there is any difference between the two, and see what difference there is between the object appearance and the subject thought. When looking at the object, if the object is clearly present there, is there a feeling of "it is like that"? Or without the feeling of "it is like that", the object has not disappeared, but is plainly present, and the mind that observes is without grasping, without clarity, but is still, and the two seem to be without difference. It seems that there is nothing to think that "it is like that, there is difference or no difference." If there is a feeling that "the object is clearly present there", then there will be a feeling of "it is like that"

Look at what that is like. Likewise, see whether body and mind are one or different. If they are one, are the two—the body, which is subject to birth and death, and the mind-essence, which is free from birth and death and is permanent—one or different? If they are different, then the two, body and mind, must be recognized separately. The mind (35) does not abide here, but pervades the body without beginning or end, experiencing feelings—what is that? Body and mind are dependent and support, the body is outside and the mind inside, like a person and clothes, and if you think that feelings are felt by the body alone, then the roots should also feel, and if the mind feels, then the two are different. For the mind, nothing like killing or cutting can be done. If the mind feels when a thorn pricks the body, isn't it like when clothes are burned by fire, the dependent is burned by fire, and the support should also be burned? Therefore, you must look carefully and make a decision. At this time, too, all arising feelings should be known as water and waves in the mind, and stay there, and in order to decide the reality from within, look like that, this is the third point. Again, when the mind is cleared into emptiness, look at the nature of the original abiding time. Again, let a thought arise and change, and then look at its nature. See whether the nature of the two, abiding and moving (36), is one or different. If you see them as different after looking like that, what is the state of being different like? Are the two, abiding and moving, like a stretched thread, wound together with equal strength, appearing in turn? Does abiding arise like the earth, and moving arise like a tree growing? Or like an illusion or a crooked rope, if there is one of the two, the other will not appear, when abiding, there will be no moving, and when moving, there will be no abiding? And moving is not unmoving, it will move out of nine kinds of moving, emitting all kinds of things. Abiding is abiding without moving, so the difference is very big. If you think they are different, then are there any differences between the two in color, shape, etc.? Or are there any differences in the three, birth, dwelling, and cessation, past, future, present, etc., and permanent and impermanent, etc.? Also observe. If thoughts are recognized as meditation, then the nature of the two, abiding and moving, is not one. The way of appearing is appearing in turn, and when abiding (37), there is no mover, and when moving, there is no abider. Like water and waves, it is just the movement or action of the mind alone. The only thing that abides is that both abiding and moving do not go beyond the clear and empty naked state, and if you realize this, you will have some realization. However, bring the thoughts back and meditate.
