Now, do not completely cut off memory, focus your gaze on the tip of your nose, and keep your bodily actions, speech, and expressions gentle and minimal. Also, continuously cut off conceptual thoughts with characteristics, gradually accustoming yourself to equanimity, this is the third point. Furthermore, to eliminate faults such as dullness and agitation, visualize a pea-sized, white, radiant, oily, and extremely clear sphere at the space between your eyebrows, and focus your mind on it. Occasionally, at the edge of your meditation cushion, focus on a pea-sized, oily, black sphere, and if you feel dull, focus your awareness on the white sphere and look towards the sky. Wear light clothing that can withstand hail and whiplashes, and consume food with low nutritional value. Do not stay in the sun or near fire. If your awareness is agitated and your mind wanders, focus your gaze and (20) attention on the black sphere. Maintain warm behavior, massage yourself, and consume nutritious food. If there is no dullness or agitation, focus your eyes and awareness on a sphere or a small blue object at the boundary of sunlight and shadow directly in front of you. Initially, just think that you are going to meditate on such a sphere, etc. Afterwards, if it is clear, that is excellent, but if it is not clear, just think that there is such a thing, and then without analyzing, leave it in its natural state, maintaining non-distraction until it appears clearly. Meditate again, shortening the duration of each session and increasing the number of sessions, this is the fourth method of mind-holding. Without relying on any object of focus, stare blankly at the sky directly in front of you, without setting any target. Do not think anything in your mind, maintain non-distraction, do not think about good or bad, past or future, maintain non-distraction with great effort, setting up only a boundary of mindfulness, and then relax, remaining in a natural (21) and unforced state. Do not be distracted even for a moment, like threading a needle, without any movement, like an ocean without waves, without any effort or fabrication, like a garuda soaring through the sky, free from all hope and fear. If you are not distracted, conceptual thoughts will not arise, but if you are distracted, a conceptual thought will suddenly arise. As soon as it arises, recognize it, stare at it, and rest as before. Similarly, whatever conceptual thought arises, recognize it, and without any acceptance or rejection, liking or disliking, place it on itself and look at it with the eye of wisdom. Rest that thought as the object of focus for mind-holding.

Fifth, maintain without falling into being too tight or too loose. The method of holding the mind by relying on the breath is to hold the vase breath without distraction. If you cannot do vase breath, you need to hold numbers, etc., (22) and take the categories of the breath going in, going out, and staying in as categories to hold. First count about twenty-one, then gradually count up to a hundred, etc. Focus the mind on the nostrils and hold the breath as a number, without being distracted by anything else. If you hold filling and releasing, exhale three times, then inhale, hold as much as you can hold, press below the navel, and release when you cannot press. Do this repeatedly without being distracted by anything else. If agitation and dullness arise, strive to gradually eliminate them. If you cannot grasp the nostrils that dwell on those categories of objects, then take other suitable objects. For people whose faculties are uncertain, some will give rise to a state of dwelling on one, two, or three objects. Some find it difficult to arise even if they meditate a lot, but if they do not give up and persevere, it is impossible not to arise. An experienced lama needs to eliminate obstacles and increase merit (23) according to the student's faculties, and by maintaining in this way, the first dwelling is like a stream flowing down a steep mountain, with many coarse thoughts, and the second is when coarse thoughts disappear, thoughts will arise sporadically, but you will be able to recognize them and immediately become naturally pacified, like a great river flowing continuously in practice. Finally, all subtle and coarse thoughts disappear, and you will be calmed in a state of non-thought, which is to dwell calmly, clearly, brightly, easily, and freely in a state of clear non-thought, so until such a dwelling arises, generate diligence. Even after it arises, practice continuously without interruption. Sixth, if the above three dwellings have not arisen, then generate constant diligence and do it through the three ways of tight, loose, and reversing. Among them, tight is body posture, viewing method, and mind concentration, restrained by discipline, not allowing distraction for even a moment, like walking on a single-plank bridge, the object (24) this object without practice, gently urge, apply strength well, do not allow distraction for even a moment, shorten the time, increase the number of times. Loose is including the relaxation of body posture. This practice has no object to hold onto, and the mind is naturally
