Thinking and meditating on emptiness, but emptiness becomes degenerate, thus becoming rough on karma and its results. Therefore, abandon the practice of emptiness fabricated by conceptual mind that clings to non-existence, and look at the nature of that non-clinging, without any modification. If one does not understand that all that should be abandoned and all that should be embraced are emptiness, when many afflictions and evil thoughts arise in one's own mind, one holds these as enemies, thinking that this is taking away the life of liberation, thinking that these should be destroyed by emptiness. Like this, holding the two as what should be abandoned and what should be embraced, practicing emptiness becomes the antidote of emptiness. That is, recognize that affliction or the thought that clings to what should be abandoned and what should be embraced, and abide without any acceptance or rejection. If one does not understand that the ground, path, and result are all empty (61), but thinks that the most excellent of the paths to enlightenment is emptiness, if one realizes this, it is the excellence of the path, and all other paths besides this are inferior, like this, not thinking about the aspect of means is a wrong path of emptiness. Therefore, observe the nature of the thought that holds that path as excellent and clings to emptiness, and thereby know that everything is emptiness, there is nothing to be abandoned and nothing to be embraced, there is no excellence and no inferiority, everything is emptiness. For tantra that has not been experienced or emptiness fabricated by conceptual mind, all dharmas are extended, merely thinking that everything is emptiness, or because everything is emptiness, nothing is established. What is the use of saying what is the use of fabricated virtue? Like this, despising the cause and effect of karma is a wrong path of emptiness extension. That is, observe that thought that thinks "it is emptiness" itself, recognize it, and let it abide in the thought that is free from its own nature (62). These emptinesses fabricated by conceptual mind are not all bad in every way. For beginners, if one does not practice emptiness fabricated by conceptual mind, then even if emptiness is taught from the beginning, one cannot realize it, therefore, by familiarizing with that, emptiness will eventually be realized naturally, so it is reasonable to practice emptiness fabricated by conceptual mind. But in the end, this is a wrong path of Mahamudra, so it must be abandoned. These are obstacles to the four wrong paths, therefore, do not confuse acceptance and rejection, and in that state, do not engage in conceptual mind, but abide without modifying whatever arises, do not move from that original state, do not engage in strong physical postures and holding the breath, etc., but relax and abide in the thoughts of good, non-good, unspecified, etc.

Third, without affirming or negating anything, without accepting or rejecting, but letting it be, without clinging to any appearance, letting it be as it is. Furthermore, if thoughts and afflictions arise strongly in meditation, and sometimes coarse thoughts increase so much that they cannot be controlled by meditation, and they fluctuate violently, then thoughts become the enemy. At this time, recognize the very nature of the thought itself, and identify the thought itself, without seeing it as a fault, but thinking of it as a benefactor. By making the thought the core of meditation, it will appear as the non-dual Dharmakaya, and protect it in this way. In the past, any arising of afflictions would be eliminated by emptiness, but sometimes afflictions such as desire arise involuntarily, then afflictions become the enemy. At this time, recognize the nature of whatever affliction arises, without affirming or negating, but abiding in it, so that without abandoning it, the affliction will be purified in its own place, and it will appear in a clear, comfortable, non-conceptual emptiness state, as it is said that thoughts will be transformed into the path. Therefore, practice in this way. By searching for and examining the mind, if the mind cannot be found, and seeing that all phenomena are without inherent existence, thereby belittling all that should be abandoned and all that should be cultivated, good and evil, and mainly focusing on the experience of emptiness, causing oneself and others to disappear into emptiness, so that one does not know what to do, and clinging to emptiness, then emptiness becomes the enemy, or it is falling into darkness. At this time, also recognize the very clinging to emptiness itself, without affirming or negating, but abiding in it, so that it can be eliminated, so abide in this way. Even if one understands appearances as dependent origination, but still clings to emptiness with substantial clinging, thereby generating narrowness, or being afraid and clinging to the various appearances that are seen, and therefore feeling uncomfortable, this is called appearance becoming the enemy. At this time, recognize the nature of appearance and substantial clinging itself, without affirming or negating, but abiding in it, so that it can be eliminated. After meditating in this way, even if faith and compassion, etc., arise more strongly than others, but if these are not regarded as Mahamudra, but are left to their own devices, and compassion arises for those who do not possess these qualities, thinking: If I do altruistic deeds for them now, it will be more helpful. Therefore, without achieving accomplishment, abandoning one's own qualities and engaging in altruism, this is compassion becoming the enemy. At this time, also recognize this vague mind of compassion, without affirming or negating, but abiding in it, so that compassion will clearly appear in the nature of the great seal. By making extensive aspirations, the enemy can be eliminated, benefiting others.
