Very important. Regarding the method of settling the mind from that, Saraha said this. Thus it is said: If released, it does not move, it remains stable. I understand it like a drum turned upside down. If you think you must grasp the mind itself without losing anything, then the form of thought will become the cause of its own scattering. For example, if a person comes to a place and the official says, "I will not let you go elsewhere," if he is told to stay here today, even if he originally came willingly to stay, he will be urged by this circumstance to think that he has no choice but to arrange this and that difficult matter, and he will wonder whether it is better to grasp it or to escape, and so he will prepare to flee. If there were no command from the official, he would stay as comfortably as possible. Therefore, do not let the mind be busy with affairs, but release it loosely, and in a state of non-distraction, do not meditate on anything, do not make any modifications, but release it loosely, slackly, and lazily. In a state without hope and fear, without calculation, make it spacious. In that state, do not cut off the past, do not welcome the future, and for the present, settle without modification, without hope and fear. Completely cut off all external elaborations, and do not let the mind's appearance scatter outwards. Even if the thought arises, "It would be good to generate meditation, it would be bad if it doesn't," that itself is the cause of the scattering of thoughts, so in a state free from what is to be meditated on and the meditator, let the mind naturally, blankly, and loosely settle, and then the mind will naturally abide. Saraha said: This mind itself, bound by ropes, if released, there is no doubt that it will be liberated. Therefore, cutting off the elaborations of the three times and settling without any modification is the supreme method of finding the mind's abode. If it is not like that, but is motivated by other excessive desires, stirring within the collection of what is to be meditated on and the meditator, not grasping the key points of body posture and gaze, not subduing one's own continuum with the intense force of devotion, but sitting stiffly and swaying, the mind itself does not want to stay. In general, the characteristic of one's own mind is that it cannot be grasped if grasped, and if focused on, there is nowhere to go. All the phenomena of hope and fear come down to that reality, so if you do not know how to relax and settle in your own mind, you cannot meditate. Thus it is said. Tilopa said: Completely abandon the activities of the body, truly and slowly abide. The speech of

Inexpressible, sound and emptiness like a waterfall. Do not think of anything in your mind, look at the Dharma of the waxing moon. The body has no essence, like the trunk of a bamboo tree. The mind is like the center of the sky, beyond the realm of thought. In this state, without taking or leaving, relax and abide. Thus it is said. Do not conceptualize in your mind, be free from all desires. Self-arising, self-pacifying, like ripples on water. If you do not abide or fixate, and do not stray from the meaning. Not violating the vows, it is a lamp in the darkness. Free from all desires, not abiding at the edge. All the Tripitaka teachings will be seen without exception. If you are diligent in this meaning, you will be liberated from the prison of samsara. Meditating on this meaning, burn away all sins and obscurations. It is said to be the lamp of the teachings. Thus it is said. Cut off all connections with worldly attachment and aversion. Meditate alone at the edge of the forest or in a secluded mountain retreat. Abide in a state of non-meditation. Attain the unattainable, then attain Mahamudra. Thus it is said. In the Mind Nature Resting Dharma, it says: First, relax and abide. In order to clear away the impurities of meditation. Second, gaze with wide eyes. In order to merge shamatha and vipassana. Finally, completely relax. Do not recall the past, do not welcome the future. Without clinging, abide in the sky. Cut off the coming and going of thoughts of the three times. Thus abide in non-conceptual samadhi. Thus it is said. In the Mahamudra Ga'u Ma it says: After intensely praying to the lama on the crown of your head, relax the four limbs of the body and abide in a state of non-doing, this is the natural abiding of the body. Lips slightly parted, with a smile, without any effort, speech ceases, this is the natural abiding of speech. The way of looking with the eyes, free from the thought of wanting to meditate, without even the thought of "this is preliminary meditation" arising, just blankly and dazedly abiding, this is the natural abiding of the mind. In this state, dazedly abiding as if lust arises for a deity, this is the degree of the first preliminary practice, also called ordinary consciousness. Also called the first mind, this state appears to all sentient beings at times of fainting, resting, etc., but because it is not recognized, they wander in samsara. Now it should be recognized at all times, whether eating tsampa or holding a mala in your hand, abide dazedly in a comfortable state with the gaze of an elephant. Similarly, whether looking left or right, or looking at the sky, etc., at first the eyes blink, like a flash of lightning, clear and empty.
