It is said to be important. Furthermore, if when trying to tighten, a feeling of being oppressed or the body and speech being bound arises, it is said that it is important to relax and transform. Also, some people, once they recall a certain place or person in their conceptual thoughts, their mind seems to immediately arrive there, feeling as if that place is right in front of them. If they look at it without any fabrication, it will disappear. After that, if a sound or a feeling of heat in the body arises, the mind will go there. Also, some meaningless conceptual thoughts will suddenly come to mind. Also, one feels as if they are constantly staying in that place. For all of these, if you intensely gaze at where the thought has gone, it will naturally liberate itself. Even if this doesn't happen, repeatedly relax, loosen, and dismantle during the practice sessions. Furthermore, consciousness is like a monkey. If a monkey is put in an empty house, it will peek out of all the windows and imitate people's actions. Similarly, conceptual thoughts, once the eyes see an object, will chase after it and imitate it. Similarly, when experiencing sounds, smells, tastes, tactile sensations, etc., they will chase after and imitate them in the same way. Recognizing this and placing it on one's own foundation, the ability will quickly become complete, and it is necessary to be able to know even the slightest movement of a hair tip. If such a situation arises and one says they don't know, and then lets it go unchecked, sometimes they will do some meditation in that place. That kind of meditation is called clinging to mindfulness, fabricated meditation. Most practitioners these days are doing this, so it is said not to engage in artificial fabrication and alteration, but to rest single-pointedly. Furthermore, like a drop of water falling into water, if one can feel all the conceptual thoughts that arise and make them disappear without a trace; and like the tip of a bird's feather being blown by the wind, if one can immediately recognize the slightest movement, one will not be lost. These can also be transformed into obstacles to tranquility and enhancements of power. If needed, this is the thirty-eighth teaching. The most crucial thing for eliminating obstacles and enhancing power depends on devotion. Great devotion, great practice; moderate devotion, moderate practice; small devotion, small practice; if there is no devotion at all, practice will not arise. Therefore, the quality of practice here depends on the size of devotion, so pray and generate devotion from the depths of your heart and bones.

Therefore, it is very important to focus single-mindedly on the object. Therefore, it is very important for beginners to shorten the meditation sessions. At first, even for each breath, meditate for only a short time. Afterwards, gradually lengthen the meditation time, and it is important to distinguish between good and bad experiences: good experiences at the end of retreat, and also good experiences right at the beginning. The same goes for bad experiences. The same goes for the meditation sessions. In general, if one becomes lazy at the beginning of retreat and meditation, it will get worse and worse, and it will be difficult to correct later on. If one increases the practice slightly at the beginning, then meditation will become easy and smooth before the end of the retreat and meditation session. When setting an object, if the object that is set is clear and one-pointedly abides in it, then focus on it for as long as possible. If the object is not clear, then set the object clearly, and thinking in your mind that you will meditate on such an object, relax without modification. This is also called shamatha because the mind abides closely by the power of the instructions on mind-holding. Merely being calm because one has not encountered the causes of distraction does not count as samadhi, because this can happen even to those who are as dull as sheep, therefore it is impure. By the power of yoga, if the mind attains a one-pointed state at the end of a moment, a day, a month, a year, or even an eon, then it can be said that there are various distinctions between small, medium, and great shamatha samadhi. Shamatha means that the mind has pacified the signs of afflictions or conceptual thoughts, and abides one-pointedly in the nature of virtue, hence the name. The cause of shamatha is reliance on ethics, and its nature is being devoid of afflictive conceptual thoughts. The condition arises from a special way of abiding, and the benefit is suppressing the gross afflictions and sufferings. End of the thirty-ninth Dharma session. Entering the main practice: Shamatha.
