One should think, "Just as things happen, let the mind rest in its own place." Therefore, one should decisively determine that all scattered thoughts are meaningless and focus single-pointedly on samadhi. One should also practice the samadhi object that uses the above to control the below. Dullness is when there is no sleepiness, but there is no clarity of awareness, or lethargy is when one sinks into a drowsy state, so in that state, one doesn't even feel the flow of thoughts. One also cannot distinguish between good and bad experiences. As an antidote, one should do the above object and conduct, and make a hole in the side of one's sleeping place. Then, let the wind come from there and blow on the body. The cause of dullness or lethargy, or the karma from previous lives, is slandering the guru and the Three Jewels, so one should confess before a special object of refuge. And diligently practice and recite the Hundred Syllable Mantra and Vajrasattva practice, confessing sins, etc. Eliminate (dullness and lethargy) by wiping stupas, prostrating, and making offerings, etc. Or, without seeking a separate antidote to dullness and agitation, but by looking at its own essence, thereby recognizing it as one's own mind, or recognizing that the mind is emptiness free from elaboration, in this way, the awareness of dullness and agitation itself will arise as wisdom that has not been abandoned. In this way, the mind will surely be controlled. There, the three experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-thought will arise, and the thought will arise, "I have meditated well, I am an enlightened one." However, if there is no prayer to the guru, and if attachment to worldly things has not fundamentally changed, then even if the meditation experience is good, it is only a slight disturbance. Therefore, in order to cultivate meditation, it is important to have devout prayer, and to renounce attachment to this life and go to a solitary place. Meditation that arises without devotion is headless. Meditation that arises without renouncing attachment is footless. A body without a head and feet can do nothing. Thus, due to the power of the arising of the experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, attachment to worldly pleasures will disappear. One doesn't even need to eat. One doesn't even feel the flow of breath. Great joy will arise, thinking that this is the intention of the Buddha. One will have a firm conviction that the guru is a Buddha. Also, contaminated clairvoyance and miraculous powers, etc., will arise, but one should not be attached to them. If one persists in this focused experience for a year, later, after gaining realization, it will become stable. The standard for stable shamatha is that one does not feel the wind, the movement of the body back and forth, and existence.

The middle observes the feeling, and finally the coming and going of the wind and the heaviness of the body will not cause hindrance. This is the thirty-sixth Dharma teaching. Third, the method of increasing stability is: First, focus your awareness on any clear image that appears in your field of vision, whether good or bad. When it is clear, focus on all the images that can be seen. When it is stable, focus on the sound that appears in the ear realm, the smell that appears in the nose realm, the taste that appears in the tongue realm, the touch that appears in the body realm, and whatever arises in the mind realm. In particular, for thoughts that should be abandoned, such as the five poisons of attachment and aversion; for thoughts that should be adopted, such as generosity and other virtues; and for thoughts that are neither virtuous nor non-virtuous, focus your awareness on any thought that arises in the mind. Some say that thoughts that should be abandoned must be strictly prohibited, but doing so will increase thoughts and make it difficult to generate samadhi. Therefore, no matter what thought arises, do not regard the thought as a fault, but relax on the thought itself, neither indulging nor suppressing it. Without losing mindfulness, let the thoughts flow naturally. Do not let any thought get out of control, and identify each thought that arises. Then rest for a while. Practicing in this way again, the thought will become the support of the mind, and the thought will cease, which is unexpected. If this does not happen and there are still many thoughts, do not regard it as a fault, but maintain non-distraction. In this way, there is no difference between the way of looking at things before and the way of looking at thoughts now, so it itself becomes the ultimate of mind concentration. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: Because attachment and so on are there, appropriate attention is there, therefore liberation from it, just like that, definitely arises from it. And as stated in the Hevajra: The fire of the forest binds the world, and desire itself is liberation. And as stated by Gyalwa Yang Gonpa: Do not regard the thoughts of wisdom as enemies, do not deliberately pursue non-thought, erect the fence of mindfulness, and meditation will be realized on the basis of calm abiding. This is the meaning of what is said. Moreover, it is very important to practice continuously, and tightening and loosening should also be alternated. Tightening means focusing on one object of focus, tightening meticulously, and not allowing distraction for even a moment.
