Yes, steadfastness is not wavering, and holding is not letting go. As Kyemé Zhang said: Cutting off the elaborations of the three times is what should be done. Do not recall the past, do not anticipate the future, and do not dwell on the present. Let awareness relax and rest in its natural state, without any artificiality. If you do not know how to relax, awareness will not truly arrive, and wisdom will not arise. For example, a person in chains only thinks of escaping, but if not in chains, there is no thought of escaping. Similarly, if you grasp at awareness, it will scatter. If you do not grasp it, it will not scatter, so let awareness relax. In the state of relaxation, that very instant, awareness is clear and unceasing, vivid, clear, and empty, and it is impossible for it not to manifest. In short, do not think about the previous thought, do not think about the subsequent thought. What kind of thought is arising now? Like this, if you stare at the present moment of thought, the flow of thoughts will completely cease. If you do not become distracted, thoughts will not arise. Non-distraction and thoughts arise together. Let the arising thought be as it is, and by staring at it, the thought will naturally dissolve and become calm. Like this, whatever thoughts arise, let them be as they are, and keep staring at them. In a short period of time, when clarity dawns, cut off distractions, and practice for short periods and many times. Also, on a comfortable seat, in the vajra posture and so on, do not meditate on Mahamudra. Similarly, do not intentionally meditate on unborn, free from elaboration, beyond mind, without characteristics, without object, object, and characteristics, and so on. So how should one practice? Do not move the body, do not blink the eyes, do not chase after the traces of past thoughts, do not welcome the arrival of future thoughts. Grasping the present moment of thought is the key. Because by staring at the present thought, in that very instant, cause and effect are simultaneous, and characteristics naturally dissolve into dharmata. Like this, by repeatedly looking at the arising of thoughts, after a while, the thought will be grasped, and in that very instant, it will be liberated. In the instant of grasping the thought, one realizes Mahamudra.

It is called so. It is called arising from the Samadhi lineage. It is called meditation-born, that is, in the very moment of recognizing thoughts, it defeats and purifies all the sins accumulated from beginningless time. Thus it is said. Like a fool herding a cow, the yogi's awareness is let go as it pleases. Place it like a corpse of a dog without attachment. Place it like a leper without desire. Like a Brahmin spinning thread, let the yogi's awareness be relaxed. Place it like a corpse without grasping. Place it like a madman without memory. Place it like unobstructed space. Place it like a clear glass ball. Place it like an uncorrected child. Sit steadily in a calm place. This is the teaching of how to settle the mind. When the mind is settled in this way, the state of mind is that only awareness remains, or nothing flows into awareness, but it remains firm. When this happens, one recognizes that the mind has been grasped. Before, one would think that one was completely lost in discursive thoughts. When the mind is settled in this way, first meditate for a short time and many times. Then gradually lengthen the time of meditation. Later, when you are used to it, you can settle down wherever you are. There is also no difference in the four modes of conduct. The signs of the mind being settled are that when experiences arise, as soon as awareness is directed towards them, they immediately subside. One also becomes self-satisfied. One feels happy, awareness is very comfortable, one does not want to do anything, one wants to meditate again and again, one does not want anything, awareness is very clear, joy arises again and again, one wants to live in a secluded place, one gains certainty in the instructions, one repeatedly feels respect for the lama, one feels aversion to samsara, one feels that one must meditate, otherwise it is of no use, one feels that one is about to die. One will feel that meeting such a Dharma and accumulating merit is a joy. Such things arise endlessly. This is also called the beginning of calm abiding. It is also called grasping the mind. It is also called the mind abiding or like fire spreading in a field. Thus it is said. The accomplished Ugyenpa said: Taking the meaning of Mahamudra into practice is the real basis for purifying adventitious stains, so when the path is completed, adventitious stains are the expulsion of objects. When asked to bestow such Mahamudra instructions, he replied, "There are separate instructions for that."
