Without the slightest stain of conceptual grasping such as is and is not, existence and non-existence, good and bad, one should abide in the state of clarity and emptiness, free from grasping, in a manner that cannot be fixed. Although the meaning of the abiding nature of Mahamudra's essence does not depend on whether the elaborations of the three times are cut off or not, nevertheless, when a beginner engages in meditation, if the stream of thoughts of the three times is not cut off, samadhi will not arise in the mind-stream. Therefore, when taking the instructions for practical application, it is crucial to instruct in this way. The twenty-second Dharma discourse, the twentieth point. Therefore, when stabilizing the mind, if one desires a place to stabilize and strains too much, it will become a cause of distraction. So, initially, just release and generate the aspiration to settle into equipoise, but apart from that, do not actually engage in thoughts of wanting to meditate, and do not even think, "I am now going to practice the preliminaries." Instead, remain in a dazed, open, and relaxed state of non-grasping. Make this a habit, and during the four activities of daily life, do not stray from that state of clarity and emptiness, free from grasping. Initially, try to maintain non-distraction for a short period, such as while taking a bite of food, a sip of tea, reciting one mala of mani mantras, or taking two or three steps after standing up. Once accustomed to this, train to remain in the non-distracted state of clarity and emptiness, free from grasping, regardless of whether the circumstances are good or bad, or whether the gathering is large or small. The meaning of all of this is also expressed by Lord Gampopa: "Do not cut off the past, do not welcome the future, rest the present awareness powerfully in its natural state." "Do not cut off the past" means that our mind does not follow after previous thoughts. "Do not welcome the future" means that our mind does not welcome future thoughts. "Rest the present awareness powerfully in its natural state" means to rest in the present without fixating on anything. If the mind is not fabricated, it is clear; if the water is not stirred, it is pure. Therefore, rest powerfully and naturally in the unfabricated state. When resting in this way, clarity arises without thoughts, a sense of spaciousness and lightness, like the sound of a bell ringing or the duration of raindrops falling. Do not regard a long duration as a virtue, nor a short duration as a fault, but meditate in this way. After that, when a thought arises, release it and rest. The mind itself, bound by ropes.

If you relax, there is no doubt that you will be liberated. Because it is something to be done, relax. Like that, relaxing and meditating, when the clear and non-conceptual state lasts longer and longer, you will immediately enter the state of your own nature. That is what is called the continuous samadhi like a river. Furthermore, Dagpo Rinpoche said about the intention of Ḍombhi Heruka: Just as water is clear when it is not turbid, rest without artificiality. Just as the sun is not obscured by clouds, do not negate the six consciousnesses, but rest in their own state. In all times and activities, rest without distraction. Furthermore, Jey Götsangpa said: Relax and rest in the state of absence. Let it go loosely, rest without grasping. That is, the mind cannot be found by searching, cannot be seen by looking, cannot be established by examining, cannot be grasped by holding, will not go if released, will not stay if left, will not mix if mixed, cannot be divided by separating, cannot be broken by tearing apart, cannot be known by looking, cannot be understood by explaining, cannot be represented by any example, cannot be reached by anything, and there is no contradiction no matter what name is given to it. How to practice it? Do not deliberately scatter, do not deliberately gather, do not leave it in equanimity. Do not let thoughts run wild, do not follow arising feelings, do not add intellectual adulteration. Do not grasp external emptiness as real, do not view internal selflessness as nothing. Do not regard the rootless movement as a fault. Do not let it go to the side of appearance-grasping or emptiness-grasping. Do not chase after the past, do not welcome the future, do not grasp the present as real, but let the knowing be naturally loose, effortlessly relaxed, unattachedly open, without grasping, innocently clear, unobstructed and open, clearly without obscuration. There is not a single object left outside, and not a single thought left inside, rest evenly. As Saraha said: This mind bound by ropes, if you release it, there is no doubt that you will be liberated. Furthermore, leave the uncorrected awareness raw. With a corrected mind, you will not attain the path of the noble ones. As it is said, by resting the uncorrected awareness in its own state, coarse thoughts will cease, the experience of clarity and emptiness will arise, the kindness of the lama will be remembered, one will feel happy and content, and aversion to samsara will arise. This is called stillness (zhi-gnas), stillness (zhi) is the pacification of afflictions, abiding (gnas) is abiding in its meaning, and so is samadhi.
