One should focus single-mindedly without distraction. Thirtieth session, twenty-seventh object. Furthermore, if many thoughts arise continuously, do not regard this as a fault. Instead, cultivate joy, thinking, "Let thoughts arise as much as they can." With mindfulness, recognize the extent to which they arise, without letting them run wild. By placing them without a basis, the thoughts become a support for holding the mind itself, and by dissolving into the groundlessness, abiding arises. During these times, do not be distracted for even a moment, like threading a needle, or like a warrior entering battle. The nature of mind is unwavering, and letting it go as it pleases is like a bird flying from a ship, or like an ocean free from waves. Free from effort, like a garuda soaring through the sky, or like a wise person training an elephant. All of these should be done during all times of shamatha. During these times as well, with the intention of "I shall hold the mind," and in actuality, station a sentinel of mindfulness, carefully examining whether my mind is abiding or not abiding, whether it is sinking or agitated. If you see that the mind is abiding peacefully, leave it without disturbing it. If it is not abiding, and there is a fault of sinking or agitation, strive to apply methods to eliminate each fault. The methods can be learned from the guru. The meditation should also initially be done in short sessions, one session for each breath, and then gradually lengthen the sessions. If you continue for a long time from the beginning, the objects will become mixed and confused, and there will be a fault of becoming uncomfortable. Therefore, beginners should do short sessions with many repetitions, in a clear, bright, and energetic manner, resting while continuously repeating, without letting meditation and affliction become separate. It is important to strive to generate joy in the mind through subsequent practice. Thirty-first session, twenty-eighth object. Thus, relying on the practice of the instructions for grasping what has not been grasped, three abidings arise in succession. First, there is a state where the mind does not firmly abide on the object, which is just a slight grasp. Then, when awareness becomes slightly clearer, it seems that more thoughts arise than before, but this is not that the thoughts have increased. Previously, without having meditated, even if conceptual thoughts arose, you did not notice them. Now, having placed the mind evenly and awareness being clear, you are aware of them. Regarding this, the spreading out of thoughts...

Without following after, remaining in that state, thoughts do not fall into the lower currents, and the measure of arising is confirmed. Without needing to shorten the sessions, awareness seems to flow like a fine thread, but if the continuity of meditation is unbroken, then it is called the first abiding, like water flowing from the face of a steep cliff. If we are caught in the midst of that cliff's flowing water, being carried away by it, then it is not right. If one regards it as unimportant, then it is acceptable. If one observes in the manner described above, then thoughts become subtle and enter a state of non-thought. Occasionally, thoughts arise abruptly, but they do not continue, vanishing like snow falling on a rock. The mere movement of thoughts gives rise to distinctions and numbers, and if one's meditation flows like a gentle stream, then it is called the intermediate abiding, like a river flowing slowly. If it seems far away, and one cannot clearly see its manner of flowing, then it is not right. If one is close and can see it, then it is acceptable. If one cultivates in the manner described above, then coarse and subtle thoughts cease, and one abides brightly in a state of non-thought. The body feels comfortable or one is aware of its existence, the movement of breath stops or one is unaware of it. The mind flows smoothly in comfort, clarity, and non-thought. In the post-meditation state, if one does not examine well, one cannot grasp the details of objects. The mind does not engage in distraction, and one seems to become forgetful. Even without meditating, one smoothly enters a state of meditation. If one experiences a clarity, like the center of a clear, cloudless sky, without depth or surface, bright and clear, then it is called the final abiding, like an unmoving ocean. If it is like an ocean in the dark, then it is not right. If it is like an ocean in the daytime, then it is acceptable. This is the main practice of meditation, and if one practices it for a long time, then clairvoyance and other abilities will arise, and it will become the basis for seeing the truth. When any of these three abidings arise, by introducing them, one will recognize one's own nature. One will find the thread, and cut off superimpositions. If one introduces them before they have arisen, then one will be mistaken in practice due to desire. The first abiding cannot prevent small afflictions. In a single transmission, it is impossible to avoid the arising of at least the intermediate abiding. If the first two have arisen, but the final third has not, then one must meditate on the instructions for stabilizing what has been grasped. Therefore, for these experiences, one should first ask how they arise, and then, based on the answers, correct and improve them, without showing the method.
