What's the use, what's the use! At that time, if there was merit to rely on for protection, I didn't rely on it! Thus it is said. This body, achieved through many hardships, sustained by food and clothing, will not go with you, it will be eaten by birds and dogs, or burned by a blazing fire, or rot in the water, or be buried in a pit in the ground. Thus it is said. This is the second part of the Dharma session and meditation session. The actual way of dying is either being suddenly killed by fire, water, poison, weapons, planets, etc., or some are afflicted by long-term illnesses, and even if rituals and medical treatments are performed, they are of no help, and the body and mind are oppressed by unbearable suffering. The strength to speak is lost. Food is beneficial but difficult to swallow. One wants to drink water but is stopped by the doctor. Sounds of "Ah na hu khu" are emitted. One cannot sleep at night, and one involuntarily becomes drowsy during the day. One lies at the end of the bed, puts the last food into one's mouth, and the last words are nonsensical. Dust accumulates on the face, and dirt sticks to the clothes. One feels as if one is falling underground. The breath is exhaled from the mouth and cannot return, and the eyes roll back and one dies. The body is taken to a graveyard. The mind, separated from the body, involuntarily wanders in the bardo following the karma it has accumulated. Due to karmic force, it takes hold of the place of rebirth in the next life. In this regard, the sutra says: "This world will be abandoned, one will go to the other world, great beings will lift one up, one will enter into great darkness, parents, siblings, sons and daughters will surround one, the breath will be cut off, and the wealth will be divided." They will say, "Alas, father, alas, mother, alas, child." The hair will be pulled out. At that time, there is no other refuge, place, or friend except for the Dharma. At that time, the Dharma will become an island, a protector, a place, and a teacher. Thus it is said, it will become like that. Furthermore, the holy beings of the past also encouraged their minds due to impermanence, abandoned this life, and made practice the essence, thereby perfecting the two benefits. Such as Jowo Je (Atiśa, c. 982-1054), Lochhen Rinchen Zangpo (958-1055), Chakri Chenpo, Amé Jangchub Sherab Dorje, Zenggom Wangchuk Gyaltsen, Potowa (1031-1105), Kharakpa, and many other wise and accomplished beings, encouraged their minds due to impermanence, practiced diligently, and thereby attained siddhis. We, having food and clothing, are not satisfied, we need something better; having wealth to use is not enough, we need to accumulate it.

Even if done or not done, that Dharma seems like a heart disease of death. If consciousness is clear, thinking "nothing matters," it is very important to study the biographies of past lamas. Therefore, rather than a universal monarch, a virtuous friend who can teach a single word of Dharma is better. Rather than decorating with palaces, gardens, and the seven precious things, it is better to live in a mud hut away from the three doors of non-virtue. Rather than accumulating wealth, contentment and knowing enough is a greater treasure, so it is very important to grasp this. Therefore, thinking that one does not know when one will die, restrain the mind, generate renunciation, and with a strong sense of urgency, spend day and night in virtuous practice, without letting meaningless thoughts waste time, it is very important to meditate on death and impermanence, and if understanding and certainty of death and impermanence are not born in the mind, meaningless thoughts will not arise. If meaningless thoughts do not arise, one will not strive in virtuous practice but will become lazy, so whether or not virtuous practice succeeds depends on this. In short, what is to be meditated on is: the end of birth is nothing but death. Moreover, one does not know when one will die, and at the time of death, nothing but Dharma can help, thinking in this way, sometimes one is struck down by one's own illness and dies, the corpse is sent to the charnel ground, becomes a skeleton, and the consciousness floats helplessly like a bird feather carried by the wind, one should focus on this, generating renunciation and a sense of urgency. This is the third Dharma session and meditation session. Next is thinking about the law of cause and effect. After that, one must think about the law of cause and effect. In general, all happiness and suffering arise dependent on karma. The Hundred Deeds says: Deeds are various, therefore beings are various. And the White Lotus of Compassion says: The world is made by karma, transformed by karma. Sentient beings are made by karma, born from the cause of karma, and distinguished by karma. And the Treasury of Knowledge says: From karma, various worlds are born. Therefore, karma can be summarized into two types: karma of thought and karma after thought, and it can also be summarized into the three karmas of body, speech, and mind. That is done by the mind, the mind is the karma of mind, and it generates the karma of body and speech. Thus it is said. Therefore, whatever happiness and suffering appears in this life is the result of good and bad deeds done in previous lives.
