The so-called earth is unique, in the past, present, and future, there is not a single sentient being who can live without dying. If even the Vajra nature body of the perfectly complete Buddha will perish, what are we? As the great scholar Ashvaghosa said: On earth or in heaven, have you ever seen someone who was born and did not die? Have you heard of it? Or do you have doubts about it? It is also said: All the bodies of the Buddhas, adorned with excellent marks and signs, even the Vajra body is impermanent, let alone sentient beings who are like trees by the water without essence? Etc., countless things were said. Death is swift, and when it will happen is uncertain. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge (Abhidharmakosha): Here, the end is uncertain, the first ten years are immeasurable. As it is said, the lifespan of us Jambudvipa (Southern Continent) people is uncertain, and we are now at the stage of being over fifty years old. Moreover, due to sudden causes such as poison and planets, people who are alive and sleeping tonight become corpses tomorrow morning, such situations have also been seen, so it is said to be uncertain. The more years, months, days, etc. pass, the closer one gets to death, like being forced into a dead end, death will come. Just like a strong man shooting an arrow, or water flowing from a cliff, or like a prisoner being led to the execution ground, death is swift. For example, a strong man puts an arrow on the bowstring and shoots it quickly, the arrow does not stop and immediately reaches the target. People's lives are also like this. Also, as stated in the Sutra of Gathering: Friends, this life passes quickly, flowing quickly like a rapid stream from a cliff, but children do not understand, unwise people are intoxicated by the arrogance of enjoyment. Also, as stated in the Sutra of Trees: Like a prisoner being led to the execution ground, every step taken is closer to death. Also, as stated in the Collection: For example, those who are destined to be executed, every step they take, they approach the execution ground, people's lives are also like this. Thus it is said. One will die without having time to purify sins, because life is uncertain, there are many causes of death and few causes of survival, and even the causes of survival may turn into causes of death. As stated in the Letter to a Friend: This life is full of dangers, like being blown by the wind, it is even more unstable than a bubble in water, breathing in and out, waking up from sleep, it is truly amazing to have the leisure to wake up.

And also, in the "Garland of Jewels," it says: "The causes of death are many, but the causes of life are not so. Those causes themselves are also aids to death, therefore, one should always accumulate Dharma." And also, in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way," it says: "If my sins are not purified, I will surely die prematurely." And it also says: "It is not reasonable to live comfortably, thinking that one will not die today. When I cease to exist, that which is unavoidable will surely occur." Thus it is said. The affairs of Dharma and the world are not finished, not completed, and one thinks that things should be done in order. In this state of mind, the Lord of Death will come unwillingly. Therefore, one should not only pursue the interests of this life, but should strive to accomplish the interests of the next life. Tomorrow and the next life, which will come first is uncertain, therefore, one should not strive for the affairs of tomorrow, but should strive for the benefit of the next life. And also, in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way," it says: "Day and night do not stay, this life is constantly decreasing, if there is no additional increase, how can I not die?" Thus it is said. No matter how brave and skilled, how majestic and swift, how eloquent, how wealthy and powerful, how much wealth is accumulated, death cannot be averted. At the time of death, everything will be left behind except for the fruits of the karma that was done before. Like pulling a hair out of butter, one goes naked and empty-handed. Now, the body cannot endure hunger, cannot endure cold, cannot endure thirst. Fearing being beaten, fearing being killed, fearing being bound, fearing being captured, enduring suffering and hardship solely for the sake of the body's survival, all of these will be loathed by everyone at the time of death, and they will turn their backs. Those who enjoy these riches will try to obtain them. That body will be bound with ropes, taken to the cemetery, eaten by birds and beasts, and nothing will remain except for the bones, not even a trace of the past. Or it will be burned in a fire, leaving only a handful of ashes, or it will be thrown into the water, eaten by fish and frogs, or buried underground, eaten by worms. One cannot go beyond these situations, so at that time, there is no refuge or protector other than white virtuous deeds and the Three Jewels. Therefore, at that time, it is very important to have a firm conviction of not regretting. As it is said in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way": "Even if I am lying in bed, surrounded by all my relatives and friends, the feeling of the cessation of life will only be experienced by myself. When seized by the messengers of Yama, relatives will
