When one repeats things in that way without examining them, the true Madhyamika is said to be the noble person who abides equally in the dharmata of learning and non-learning. Other worldly people besides that are worldly people who speak of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination, namely, noble learners who, in the post-attainment state, engage in the conduct of worldly conventionalities, and ordinary beings who are worldly people who speak of knowable things as being dependently originated. Among these, there are two types: those who speak of a limited number of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination, and those who speak of all knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination. (395b) The first is: some who have entered into outer and inner philosophical systems, who say that although some things do not perform a substantially established function, they do perform a function by way of imputation, because knowable things that are imputed are established as dharmas of dependent origination. The second is: if all knowable things were to arise by their own nature, they would become permanent or annihilated, and in that case, knowable things would also be cut off in name. Therefore, since knowable things arise in dependence on other causes and conditions, knowable things will not be cut off in name. They merely conceive of all knowable things as dependent origination, and they are worldly people who have not realized the emptiness of dependent origination. Worldly people who speak of knowable things as not being in accordance with dependent origination are also worldly people other than Madhyamikas. So, is the Madhyamika person a person who speaks of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination or not? One should not say definitively that it is both yes and no, because Madhyamikas do not speak of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination in their own system, but in order to tame those to be tamed, they speak of knowable things as being both in accordance with and not in accordance with dependent origination out of necessity. So, is the person who speaks of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination said to be a Madhyamika or not? That person who realizes the emptiness of dependent origination and only speaks of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination in the eyes of others is considered to be both a person who speaks of knowable things as being in accordance with dependent origination and a Madhyamika person, as it is known to others, because there can be multiple identities on one basis. Even so, realizing the emptiness of dependent origination, (396a) and speaking of knowable things as being established by their own nature or their own system

Therefore, it is also unreasonable to posit that a person who agrees with the dependent arising of knowable objects is established by their own nature. No Madhyamika has ever appeared who claims that the dependent arising of knowable objects is established nominally by its own nature. The great teachers Shantarakshita and Chandrakirti extensively refuted the great teacher Leghden-byed and his followers, such as the teacher Chenrezig-trulzhug, and the key to this lies here. If this key is understood, the dividing line between the Madhyamika-Prasangika and Shentong schools and the way they are established will be easily understood without confusion. Otherwise, if some Tibetans do not understand this point and write large volumes based on their own limited speculations about the dividing line between the Madhyamika-Prasangika and Shentong schools and how each of their tenets are established, then the more they say, the more meaningless it becomes. However, according to the views of those great teachers, how they made refutations and affirmations, as they said, is not seen in the systems of those who establish new Tibetan Madhyamika tenets. Therefore, if a person who posits that the dependent arising of knowable objects is established by its own nature in emptiness is not a true Madhyamika, then they do not understand the dependent arising of knowable objects in emptiness, and if they do not speak of it, how can they be a Madhyamika? Again, there is a doubt like this: worldly beings who are noble beings should not be Madhyamikas, because they are not noble beings who abide in the equipoise of learning and non-learning. If you think so, then it is accepted that they are not true Madhyamikas, but if you say that they are merely followers, that is not pervasive. Because worldly beings who are noble beings, those who merely posit the dependent arising of knowable objects as being established by others in emptiness, boast that they have understood with direct perception or inferential valid cognition the equipoise of noble beings who are learning and non-learning, which is merely free from elaboration, and they transfer all analysis to others, and they do not hold on to any elaboration such as refutation and affirmation in their own system, so they do not elaborate on any extreme of speech, thought, or expression. At that time, if they do not hold on to anything in their own system, then at that time, they have not promised to accept the system of others. The Madhyamika says that dependent arising is free from extremes in emptiness, and for that,
