Therefore, they do not even acknowledge that such a conventional appearance is merely conventional, because in this way, Madhyamikas arise from abiding in the nature of reality, and when they engage in conventional terminology in the post-meditation state without examination, due to the engagement of memory and wisdom that are similar to illusions and dreams, they do not examine and establish that conventional truth. (394n) Even so, it is not universally the case that just because one is a Madhyamika, one engages in behavior without examination, viewing the conventional as an illusion, because some Madhyamikas with inferior intellect engage in behavior by viewing the conventional as inherently true, and they are not encompassed by the practice of the Madhyamika view. However, in relation to the mere conventional that appears due to being defiled by afflictive ignorance, that conventional appearance is not non-existent in relation to the mistaken consciousness that grasps it, because if it were not so, then the reasoning of other-established, which speaks of knowledge being in accordance with dependent origination, would not be able to validly refute the illusion of object and subject that appear as conventional truth as merely conventional, and when the grasping and the grasped appear as the inverted conventional truth from the mere conventional illusion, if the inverted object is not regarded as knowable by the mind, then the grasping of the inverted subject cannot be established either. Therefore, as it is said that knowledge is in accordance with dependent origination, if one does not examine, these phenomena such as illusions and dreams, which are without inherent existence and are capable of action and being acted upon, cannot be established there even if examined by the reasoning of other-established. Therefore, all phenomena, whether conceptual or non-conceptual knowledge, and any expression that is aroused by it, have not become the basis for being established as an object, and merely being that which has not become the basis for being established as an object, as long as it becomes the object of discriminating wisdom, then it itself becomes conventional, and when all objects and subjects of knowledge are completely pacified, the ultimate truth that is not a category is realized by the samadhi of the noble ones who are learning and not learning (394b), and it is not like a rabbit's horn. Thus, does that samadhi have the aspect of wisdom or not? I cannot say, because the samadhi of the noble ones in which all objects and subjects are completely pacified is only for the noble ones themselves...

Because only individual self-cognizant wisdom can comprehend it, no one, neither oneself nor others, can actually demonstrate it through speech or thought. Regarding the so-called "reasoning of the nature of phenomena," those who do not accord with the dependent arising of knowable objects and assert substantial existence also call it "reasoning of the nature of phenomena"; those who accord with the dependent arising of knowable objects and assert it also call it "reasoning of the nature of phenomena." Among these two, the former considers it to be a reasoning established by the substantial nature of phenomena of either or both of the two truths; the latter considers that even if it is not established in that way, it is merely a provisional designation without investigation, and the nature of phenomena that is relative to dependent arising is established as "reasoning of the nature of phenomena." In short, those who are accurately designated as Madhyamikas by other schools, the Shravaka trainees and non-trainees, regarding the worldly conventional truth that is conceived and expressed by those who do or do not accord with the dependent arising of knowable objects, as well as the suffering truth of samsaric beings visible from here, and those who experience the aspect of conventional truth, and the merely conventional, like an illusion, and the peaceful Nirvana, the ultimate truth. Like this, this aspect of conventional truth of the object and object-holder of speech and thought, deception, play, falsehood, fabrication, and designation of phenomena, although it is not established at all in one's own system, but for the sake of taming disciples, due to necessity (395n) it is a repetition of both those who assert and do not assert in accordance with the dependent arising of knowable objects. This is because for some Shravaka disciples, if the self of a person is not shown to exist, there is a danger of not entering the Buddha's teachings. Therefore, the teacher Shakyamuni Buddha said that there is a self of a person who carries the burden of the five aggregates. Then, how is the person who asserts the non-extreme Madhyamaka himself, and the person who asserts the other-renowned world from that, established as a person? If investigated, the Madhyamaka assertor himself and the person who asserts the other-renowned world are not established even in name. Even so, those who assert in accordance with the dependent arising of knowable objects say without the investigation of others: the person himself who abides in the non-extreme Madhyamaka ultimate truth, and the other-renowned world from that, the two persons who abide in the conventional truth, are said for the purpose of the nomenclature of debaters and rebutters, etc., and the Madhyamika is also due to necessity.
