Now, all distinctions of the self do not exist, because whatever distinctions of the self, such as eater, permanent, real, etc., are taught by the non-Buddhists in their respective treatises and from the treatises, are all refuted by the reason that does not give rise to a name for oneself. The meaning of the words is that the self is not permanent, because it is not produced. Like the son of a barren woman. This sign and example harm all the distinctions of the self. Third, therefore, there is no self other than the aggregates, because the mode of holding it is not established except for the aggregates. For this reason, there is no self other than the aggregates, if it were different from the aggregates, it should be able to be held separately, (284b) but the mode of holding the self distinguished by permanence etc. is not established except for the aggregates. Fourth, two types: teaching and explanation. First, the basis of the worldly ego-grasping mind is also not accepted, because even the non-intellectuals have a view of self. Not only is there no self different from the aggregates, but the self distinguished by permanence etc. is not the basis or object of the innate view of self, the ego-grasping mind of worldly beings, because even ignorant children, due to their innate tendencies, cling to the self and what belongs to the self. Second, those beings who have wandered in the lower realms for many eons, they have not seen the unborn, permanent self, but the ego-grasping is also seen in them, therefore, there is no self other than the aggregates. If one thinks that even if one does not understand the self distinguished by permanence etc. now, but thinks that due to previous habits, there is an ego-grasping that takes the self as its object, then it is not so, to show this: there is no other self different from the aggregates at all, because some beings have been continuously reborn in the lower realms for many eons and still do not turn away from there for a long time, they have not seen the unborn, permanent self desired by the non-Buddhists, and the basis of karma and its effects, the nominally existent established by valid cognition, which the great scholar Tsongkhapa considers, and the object of clinging, such as the self to be refuted as a sign of searching for the meaning of the nominally existent without being satisfied with the nominal existence and not finding it. But they also see clinging to the aggregates as the self.

Therefore, wise people would not posit such a "self" as the basis of ego-grasping. Because the "self" that is the basis of ego-grasping is a nominally designated dharma, and to establish it as an object of worldly direct perception in this way is an imputation unheard of in either the world or the scriptures. The second part has two sections: stating the former view and refuting it. The first part has two sections: the view and the divisions. The first view is: Because there is no self established other than the skandhas, the object of the view of self is only the skandhas. The Many Honored Ones and other proponents of their own system say: The object of the view of self is only the skandhas, because, as stated by the reasoning mentioned earlier, there is no self established other than the skandhas. Therefore, the self is merely the skandhas. The second view is: Some assert that the skandhas, as the basis of the view of self, are all five skandhas; some assert that it is only one mind. The second part has two sections: direct refutation, and concluding with the consequence of not abandoning the view of self. The first part has three sections: stating the objections, refuting the proofs, and establishing from the perspective of the person. The first part has three sections: objections by reasoning, objections by scripture, and objections by the vision of yogis. (The first part has three sections: becoming many selves, etc., becoming annihilation, etc., and conclusion. (2 The first is: If the skandhas are the self, then therefore, because the skandhas are many, the self will also become many. The self is substantial, and observing there, because of clinging to the substantial, it will not be inverted. In this way, in one continuum, the self and the person, etc., will also become many, if the skandhas are the self. Because, because form, feeling, etc., are very many. If it is thought that the mind is the self, then merely because of the six sense faculties, such as the eye, and their many moments, the self will also become so many. If you think so, then it contradicts the scripture. The scripture says: When the world arises, only one person arises. The self is substantial, and observing there, because of clinging to the substantial, it will not be inverted. The so-called "the self is substantial" means that the self is substantial. Because the accumulation of substantials of the three times, such as form, is called skandhas, and it is admitted that it is the self. If you think so, then it contradicts the scripture. The scripture says: Monks, these skandhas are only names, only conventions, only designations, just like this.
