Explanation of the absence of self of persons. Explanation of the absence of self of persons. In the context of explaining the absence of self of persons and the expanse of emptiness of phenomena. Secondly, the reasons for needing to refute the self of persons are explained. The reasoning for refuting it is explained in detail. After refuting, the three points of showing that persons are merely imputed in dependence are explained. The first is: All afflictions and faults arise from the view of the aggregates, the wise see that they arise, therefore, yogis prevent the self. After refuting the self of phenomena with scripture and reasoning, now, to refute the self of persons, yogis who desire liberation should refute the self that is the object of the clinging of the view of the aggregates, because all afflictions such as desire and faults such as birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, etc., arise from the contaminated wisdom that clings to "I" and "mine"—the view of the aggregates, and the wise have seen this, so it should be refuted. Because if the object of the clinging to self is not refuted, the subject cannot be refuted. The sutra says: "All afflictions have the view of the aggregates as their root, the view of the aggregates as their cause, and the view of the aggregates as their origin." The view of the aggregates causes the wheel of existence, which is composed of actions and other dependent origination limbs, and the three afflictions, to flourish and revolve for a long time, therefore, this investigation that eliminates the view of the aggregates is the supreme means of accomplishing liberation. Now, starting from the two absences of self, what are the self of persons and the self of phenomena? What is the reasoning for refuting them? In what way do they not exist? The self of persons is: the object of clinging of the view of the aggregates that clings to "I" and "mine," and is known as self, sentient being, person, individual, life, power-born, power-lord, experiencer, etc. Among these, there are two types of objects of the innate view of the aggregates and the imputed object. The first is: without relying on the discriminations of evil friends and bad tenets, etc., from beginningless time, due to the habit of clinging to "I" and "mine," with the aggregates as the object, the mind thinks, "I am, I possess," even birds and animals

What is innate ego-grasping? Its object is the self that is the object of innate ego-grasping, which is not established by tenets. The object of imputed ego-grasping is also threefold: such as the outsiders who impute permanence, oneness, independence, etc., as something other than the aggregates; some of the Many-Honored ones establish the aggregates or consciousness as the self; the Vatsiputriyas view the aggregates and that (self) as neither one nor different; the great Tsongkhapa considers the self imputed on the aggregates, which is different from the self to be refuted by reasoning, as the conventionally established self. Grasping onto these is called imputed ego-grasping, which does not arise spontaneously merely from beginningless habitual force, but because it is newly imputed by conceptualization due to causes such as listening, contemplating, and meditating on bad friends and inverted tenets. The object of their grasping is the self that is the object of imputed ego-grasping. The self of phenomena is that worldly people and tenet proponents impute their own nature and distinctions, such as permanence and impermanence, etc., on phenomena from form to omniscience, which are included in the aggregates, elements, and sense sources that are not persons. Divided, there are two types: innate and imputed. The reasoning that refutes them, as explained in the texts, is the reasoning that refutes the self of the outsiders, the Many-Honored ones, and the Vatsiputriyas, and the reasoning that refutes the self in phenomena is as previously explained. Among these (273b), the self that is the object of innate ego-grasping exists only nominally if not examined, because it is seen that all sentient beings have manifest clinging to "I" and "mine." The object of imputation is only imputed by individuals who manifestly cling to wrong tenets and have the habitual tendencies of that, because such tenet terminology is not known to worldly people, it is not a term that appears to be agreed upon by everyone, nor is it conventionally true. However, because worldly people do not grasp the self as other than the aggregates, the self established by the outsiders
