The Buddha's teachings as explained by those from the Svātantrika school downwards (276a) will contradict the activities of the Buddha's teachings. Furthermore, it is contradictory to truly acknowledge the yogic wisdom that directly realizes the sixteen aspects of the four truths, such as impermanence, and then claim that what is explained in the treatises of the realists cannot eradicate the innate ego-grasping of individuals. As we see it, the basis upon which one views the self of an individual, the self that is viewed in that way, and the reasoning that eliminates that ego-grasping are not inconsistent from the Kashmir Vaibhāṣikas to the Sūtra-minded Prāsaṅgikas. In the old commentary on the Madhyamakāvatāra, written by Tsap Lotsāwa, it says, "'Self' means the mind of a demon," etc., quoting a Sūtra passage, and explains that the selflessness of individuals as explained by Vasubandhu is what is entered into in the Madhyamaka. Therefore, the view of the self of an individual and the view of the perishable collection are synonymous, with different names. By imputing sentient beings and self onto the mere aggregates of appropriation and placing them as objects of attachment, the grasping onto them is done as the view of the perishable collection and the view of self. If that self exists as the substance of the aggregates or exists as the substance other than the aggregates, the reasoning that investigates and refutes it is spoken. As it says in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Whatever thought arises, 'I am,' is born together with the view of sentient beings." And in the Abhidharmasamuccaya, "What is the view of the perishable (276b) collection? It is the tolerance, desire, intelligence, discrimination, and view that truly follow the five aggregates of appropriation as 'self' or 'mine.' It is the function of being the basis of all views." And in the commentary on the Madhyamakāvatāra, "The view of the perishable collection is the defiled wisdom that engages in the aspect of thinking 'I' and 'mine.'" Thus, by focusing on the aggregates and discriminating between sentient beings and self, and between 'I' and 'mine,' it is established as the view of self. Therefore, there is no difference between the root text and commentary of Vasubandhu's Treasury and the root text and commentary of Candrakīrti's Madhyamakāvatāra in that both deny the established substance of the self that is imputed based on the mere aggregates in name only, and only accept the imputed existence. The innate grasping of the established substance of such a self is what is refuted in debate.

There is not even the slightest commonality. Apart from that, if the self and person established from the object's own side are taken as the object, then how can there be a view like the self between the subject 'I' and 'mine' based on that object? Even so, the Vaibhashikas assert that the nominally existent self is established upon analysis, and they believe that it exists as the nature of a nominally existent entity. However, the Prasangikas do not believe that it is established upon analysis, nor do they accept that it exists as the nature of such a nominally existent entity in unanalyzed conventional truth. The Vaibhashikas assert that the selflessness of a person (277a) empty of a person is accepted as a substance of the knowable object of the truth of suffering. The Prasangikas, on the other hand, state that such selflessness and emptiness are devoid of all characteristics such as knowable, non-knowable, entity and non-entity, substance and nominal, and so on. In short, the Prasangikas explain that the meaning of the unanalyzed, relative self being without inherent existence in both truths is also the meaning of such a self being empty of its own essence. However, there is no basis for establishing emptiness or non-emptiness by inherent existence based on whether or not the mode of abiding of the object is established from its own side, as in the Gelug school. Because they believe that all phenomena arise and are established from the object's own side by their own nature, this is merely like the materialists who assert nature as the cause. If one clings to such true existence, then regardless of the tenets of one's own or another's school, and regardless of any innate wisdom of the world, there will be no such clinging. Therefore, except for the materialists who assert nature as the cause, all sentient beings will effortlessly attain liberation. In short, the great Shar Tsongkhapa said that when asserting the selflessness of a person in the Prasangika system, the self grasped by innate grasping is not to be refuted as the basis of cause and effect. This is because if such a self existed, then the wisdom realizing selflessness would not engage with the reality of the object, the grasping mode of innate self-grasping would not be mistaken about the meaning, and one's own assertion that all phenomena are without self (277b) would also be contradictory. Furthermore, the Buddha's statement that all phenomena are without self would become a lie, because even without analysis, the grasping mode of the innate self-view's object, which we presume to be capable of discerning what to accept and reject,
